Aha, some evidence that the split was bollox, Ally Campbell met with her hours before she "split" with Mills:

There appear to be three people in her marriage - and one of them is Alastair Campbell. Apparently she had crisis talks with the 'former' Labour spindoctor hours before giving David Mills, her husband of 27 years and the father of her two children, the boot.

Somehow, it smacks of a highly cynical strategy to save her career. One suspects that within a few months news will emerge that the couple have been able to resolve their issues and are giving it a second go.
