John Peel substitute

but your rant doesn't make sense. You're criticising 6music etc for not giving you anything new, and then saying that's not where you'd look anyway.

simply because they cant give me anything new, if they did i'd not be ranting incorehant babbles :)

I've given up on trying to find it through the radio stations. I tend to check out stuff that is recommended to me by people on here mostly. That's pretty much it I guess :(

Lest we forget Annie Nightingale, the other veteran Radio 1 DJ. But you'd have to be into your breaks these days as thats what she mainly plays. And ruddy good stuff it is too.

It will be a sad day when she is bumped off the Radio waves.

 agreed
Annie is definatly the best DJ on the radio atm, it's brilliant that she's kept going for all these years.

i find this station generally good, alot less talk than the beeb, the DJs are real specialists and given they ain't paid to do it are pretty remarkable. Comes out of New Jersey but is generally considered NYC's finest freeform radio.

Actually, Lamarr's show is IMO the best radio show ever
It's pretty good but I wouldn't say it's up to Peely's standards. It's the best thing I've seen/heard Lamarr do.

The Breezeblock has some very interesting and varied mixes, although my experience comes from downloading them rather than the radio. Squarepusher's done a couple of corkers, and Amon Tobin's was damn good too.

I loved peels show, the day I heard my own record on his show I almost died.

He must have listened to an awful lot of shit to decide my bollocks was worth playing. My favorite anecdote probably means nothing to him, he must have touched so many people, more than he realized.

I haven't gone looking for a Peel replacement, there's no point.

I rarely listen to radio DJs now and find out about new music through the internet – here, other BBs, MySpace, label websites, record shop websites. Last FM is perfect for giving me a random yet complementary selection of music from any style I choose and no one's interrupting it by talking.

Zane lowe.. totally different style to the kinda bookish john peel, but is very adventurous in his playlists and gets away with it. also seems to have the respect of the musicians he interviews which leads to some interesting stuff coming out of their mouths..

Then he must be radically different on R1! On MTV2 he asks the most arse-clenchingly embarrassing questions. Will suspend judgement, though, and check out his radio show.

Absolutely; that's my course also. Especially LastFM.

last.fm is awesome...

Download the actual app Vic (ie, dont just type artists names into the site), then it plugs into your itunes and figures out what you like and then from that what you might also like....

edit: still no replacement for peel. but i think he'd approve of it in a way

Just had a go on it. It's great. One teensy caveat, however: it does tend to mitigate against eclectic taste - e.g. if you like Kylie and sonic Youth!:)

Seriously? What's it called?

God's Jukebox (Friday midnight - Sat 3am). His genre shows are good, but this show is faultless. Soul, gospel, rockabilly, garage, country, blues, hip-hop, indie, reggae, ska, jazz, latin. Every week. It's all his own stuff - often from his own original 7"s - his enthusiasm is amazing, he has brilliant guests, he's funny and informed. I listen to it every weekend (at some point) with soulseek fired up and probably discover 5 or 6 absolute classics every week, and it's really rare he plays something i don't like...

Pitchfork is hit and miss IMO. For the little gems you can discover on the Forkcast you have to wade through a lot of shite.

I stick on 6Music when I am in the kitchen. That usually means the dad rock selection on weekend mornings, or Mark Riley and Tom Robinson in the evenings.

Cielo Liquido Spanish indie show, Google it. He's the nearest thing to someone just playing loads of records he likes, theres Podcasts too and he plays unsigned acts
