John McDonnell now sole challenger to Brown

Brown was sucking up to the CBI tonight - see his vomit inducing speech on the BBC website. It was a hymn of praise to neo-liberalism - deregulation, 'free' trade, 'free' markets, taking risks (with other people's money, livelihoods and security). He made a great show of announcing the planning and energy reviews are coming out next Monday and Wednesday. The planning one is likely to be heavily influenced by the Barker report - basically a charter for big business to ride roughshod over local people's wishes. The energy review is likely to be a carte blanche for the nuclear industry.
Brown's corporatism - for that is what his politics are, very reminiscent of the 1930s - becomes ever more explicit. The massive backing for Brown from the supine Labour MPs and the trouble John McDonnell is having scraping enough MPs together to get nominated tells us a lot about the state of the Labour Party in parliament. I wish John well, but as for most of the PLP I have to echo Lou Reed - "Stick a fork in their ass and turn 'em over, they're done!"

It's a shame that the Parliamentary left can't unite around a left ticket like they did with Tony Benn and Eric Heffer. It doesn't auger well for the future Respect are supporting McDonnells stand and Stop The War Coalition are organising lobbies of the hustings meetings.

Brown will now go on a hustings in the manner of the Chinese Communist Party or the Soviet Union: as the single, only approved candidate, no meaningful opposition or debate, and if a vote is allowed there will only be one name on the ballot paper. Gordon Brown.

After ten years in power, the Labour Party should really ask itself how it wound up with a Communist style hustings process for the next leader and PM, with the party and public completely and deliberately excluded, and the whole thing now completely stage managed.

He's conceeded. Now what? Is this failure going to lead another 20 years of stay in the party crap. What exactly do these people who identify as labour-left need to happen before they'll make the break? The disability bill? A war in iraq?
