And according to what I once heard, the only one to make him any decent money - from Eric Clapton's version of it.Farewell to a wonderful musician
For those not familliar with him, here's his most beloved song:

...which I remember from my dad's old homemade tape of old grey whistle test numbers that was pretty much the first thing to get me interested in music.

Me too.
"Solid Air" and "One World" will never be far from my Top 10 - if not in it.
Weird - Solid Air accompanied me on my way to work this morning - haven't heard that in ages.
In 2004, as the result of a burst cyst, his right leg was amputated below the knee. Subsequently, his weight has ballooned to a far from healthy 20 stone.

Martyn’s drink-fuelled, sometimes violent exploits are as notorious as his music is revered. As he recounts past war stories, his capacity for survival is remarkable.
“I’m not a violent man,” he insists. “but sometimes it just happens. I’ve been mugged in New York and luckily I fought my way out of it. I’ve been shot a couple of times as well, but I just lay down and pretended to be dead.”
Despite all of his close shaves, John finally thought his time had come earlier this year when he caught pneumonia and spent a delirious two weeks in hospital.
Bless the Weather is the only album I vaguely like. I wasn't really a fan, although I have seen him live. (He was very pissed, and actually not very good because of that).OU: bless the weather is the only other album that compares, really.
May you never lay your head down, without a hand to hold
May you never make your bed out in the cold.
R.I.P.

Danny Baker's in a mess on BBC London - really cut up, doesn't want to be there, wants to go home and listen to Martyn records etc.
Perhaps not the place for this, but though I don't doubt he believed that, I don't think it's true. Addicts often have rationalisations for their addiction. He clearly thought his fuelled his creativity. When I saw him years ago on the Renfrew Ferry (then a floating music venue in Glasgow) he was a very sad spectacle indeed, and not at all creative.John Martyn said:"If I could control myself more, I think the music would be much less interesting," he said.
"I'd probably be a great deal richer but I'd have had far less fun and I'd be making really dull music."
Absolutely.Am I remembering right that Martyn was also troubled with diabeties? If so, his lifestyle can't have helped & the negative effects of badly controlled diabeties can present themselves in behavioural as well as physical problems.
Yeah listening to that, he's gutted. Only played Martyn since 3, except for one Nick Drake song. He's sent someone out to buy more Martyn so could be a lot more to come.
