John Martyn dead

May you never lay your head down, without a hand to hold
May you never make your bed out in the cold.

:(:(:( R.I.P.

"Solid Air" is a fabulous album. I was going to see him at a Fleadh one year but he was, ahem, "delayed".

Fantastic singer and guitarist. RIP. :(

Farewell to a wonderful musician :(

For those not familliar with him, here's his most beloved song:

...which I remember from my dad's old homemade tape of old grey whistle test numbers that was pretty much the first thing to get me interested in music.
And according to what I once heard, the only one to make him any decent money - from Eric Clapton's version of it.
It's really sad how poorly known his brilliant guitar work, superb songwriting and slurred vocals (sounds like they had to strap him onto his chair on some numbers about the time of Solid Air) are.
:(

Gutted, one of my favourite artists, saw him do Solid Air at the Barbican a couple of years ago.

He'd just been given an MBE or OBE in the new years honours.

Very very sorry to hear this. Saw him in Cardiff for the one and only time a couple of years ago - he bore the scars of his life quite lightly, although the voice was a shadow of its prime.

RIP.

Weird - Solid Air accompanied me on my way to work this morning - haven't heard that in ages.

I was listening to Desmon Dekker right before I heard he'd died. Funny old world init?

e2a: By 'he' I mean Desmon Dekker. I wasn't just being sarcastic. Just though I'd clarify that.

Had a few close calls already:
In 2004, as the result of a burst cyst, his right leg was amputated below the knee. Subsequently, his weight has ballooned to a far from healthy 20 stone.

...

Martyn’s drink-fuelled, sometimes violent exploits are as notorious as his music is revered. As he recounts past war stories, his capacity for survival is remarkable.

“I’m not a violent man,” he insists. “but sometimes it just happens. I’ve been mugged in New York and luckily I fought my way out of it. I’ve been shot a couple of times as well, but I just lay down and pretended to be dead.”

Despite all of his close shaves, John finally thought his time had come earlier this year when he caught pneumonia and spent a delirious two weeks in hospital.

Mirror story

OU: bless the weather is the only other album that compares, really.
Bless the Weather is the only album I vaguely like. I wasn't really a fan, although I have seen him live. (He was very pissed, and actually not very good because of that).

I had more respect for him and his place in the development of music than actually enjoying his music, if that makes sense.

Exactly what I was going to post :(
He was genius who used his voice as an instrument - I had a very vague acquaintance with him, he was a difficult character but this is a great loss.

RIP John.

Thats sad, Solid Air has to be one of my favourite albums.
The singer, who took to performing in a wheelchair, told Q Magazine he had no regrets.

"If I could control myself more, I think the music would be much less interesting," he said.

"I'd probably be a great deal richer but I'd have had far less fun and I'd be making really dull music."

Danny Baker's in a mess on BBC London - really cut up, doesn't want to be there, wants to go home and listen to Martyn records etc.

Yeah listening to that, he's gutted. Only played Martyn since 3, except for one Nick Drake song. He's sent someone out to buy more Martyn so could be a lot more to come.

Tom Morton just now is giving-over a lot of his show to Martyn stories/anecdotes - his own & listeners, plus more than a few songs,

Perhaps not the place for this, but though I don't doubt he believed that, I don't think it's true. Addicts often have rationalisations for their addiction. He clearly thought his fuelled his creativity. When I saw him years ago on the Renfrew Ferry (then a floating music venue in Glasgow) he was a very sad spectacle indeed, and not at all creative.

It's very sad.

Am I remembering right that Martyn was also troubled with diabeties? If so, his lifestyle can't have helped & the negative effects of badly controlled diabeties can present themselves in behavioural as well as physical problems.

Absolutely.

He was a mess, poor guy.

Five past three on Sunday - Radio Scotland are going to be repeating their programme on the Solid Air album as a tribute. Worth hearing, it will be on listen again.

Solid Air was about Nick Drake wasn't it?

Wish I could get BBC London, here it's Cov & Warks and I doubt the useless buggers would even do a Specials special if they got wiped out. :(
