John Gaunt and Talksport; How powerfull?

Doubt he has much influence at all, I reckon people form the kind of views he shouts out on a far deeper level than simply picking it up from the radio/paper and going 'I think I'll believe that then'.

Although he probably does a fair bit to reaffirm the views people come to him with, keep them nice and comfortable locked into their perceptions of reality.

I think he probably does have quite an influence. The Left has a real problem with being seen as anti common sense. People like Gaunt and Littlejohn are able to exploit this and at the same time appeal to ordinary peoples sense of injustice.

I don't buy that, personally. People listen to his shows and respond because they like what they hear or because they enjoy being outraged.

There's been a turn to the right in this country going on for some years and you can't blame it all on talk radio.

no one is 'blaming it all on.." etc etc the OP is HOW powerfull .. i think haller used the word influence, which is better

yes there has been a right turn .. so how much influence does this radio have?

The only decent thing that Revolutionary Short-Arse Tony Cliff of the SWP ever said was, "Fuck Common Sense"!

The only place 'Common Sense' leads you is to do fuck all about anything.

I listened to Gaunt this morning for the first time in a while, my interest piqued by this thread.

He was ranting about the benefits system and my impression was that he was hamming up his outrage to a large extent, but it was quite effective, not dissimilar to listening to the Sun being read out loud. Oh, and he had Frank Field on, whom he praised lavishly.

This stuff has an effect. It adds to the general noise, and it helps reinforce the long-standing argument that the country is being run by pinko liberals, to which the only alternative is the decent common-sense of the silent majority.

And I do think the left has a problem with this. ('Fuck common sense' is a wonderful comment, but it doesn't quite work as a populist slogan just yet.) There is, as far as I know, no comparable broadcaster from a left perspective - unless you count Galloway, of course.

Gaunt doesn't wield any great power in his own right, but there is a mutually supportive media network here, and he's a player.

(I ought to add that I didn't hear the whole show, because it was too exhausting - there's only so much hyped-up hostility one can take. And anyway I suddenly remembered some paint that I had to watch as it dried.)

" Fuck Common Sense" eh erm.....
Common sense tells me that there is something wrong with a world where people are starving to death in their millions while fat twats like John Gaunt make a fortune out of talking shit on the radio.

I'm sure it's my fault, but I don't entirely follow. Is it (a) his size, (b) his comments or (c) his earning capacity that's connected to starvation?

I really dont think he has that much influence. He simply reinforces the views people already have. I dont listen to him because i dont like his politics. If I had to listen to him all day he'd do my head right in!

All 3.

Over the years I've met several broadcasters (and newspaper columnists) who cultivate a particular persona, only to find that in real life they are nothing like that ... Hypocrisy and rabble-rousing of the finest order. :(

And I'd agree that his "power" is limited ... but his "influence" (a second phrasing in the original question) is, I would suggest, very high in certain demographics (succinctly described as "White Van radio" earlier).

Wait till you find that most people who use messageboards are nothing like their real life self. I once met up with a user of a large newspaper messageboard and everyone else thought she was a sweet cuddly soft liberal and that I was an absolute fascist prick. Anyway...I met this woman in a pub and she arrived with her copy of the Daily Mail under her arm and I found myself to the left of her on every single issue that was getting on her goat.

'Gaunty'

Listen to him now and again usually ranting on about how this Labour government is the cause of all that is wrong with the country.
Apparently prior to 1997 all was wonderful in GRReat BRRitain as he puts it, the sun shone out of Maggies arse and all was well with the world.

Seems to come across as a Littlejohn wannabe most of the time, spends an inordinate amount of time plugging his column in the Scum and his numerous apperances on sky news or newsnight.
Anyone who disagrees with him usually gets shouted down, insulted or if they seem to have a valid point of view, get dumped off air, usually with some sarcastic comment to which they obviously cannot reply to.

Alan Brazil (whose morning show precedes him) has started to wind 'Gaunty' up on almost daily basis during the hand over and its getting to be quite amusing listening to 'Gaunty' try and fight back usually unsuccessfully.
He usually resorts to childish insults or the fake laugh in an attempt to lessen his obvious discomfort.
Perhaps thats why he refuses to 'share the same platform' as he puts it with another TalkSport presenter Gorgeous George lol

He likes to think he has influence and power but in reality he is the latest in a long line of presenters on TalkSport who plug the same old hackneyed lines about pinko liberalism and political correctnesss gone mad!!!!!.

No doubt his 'millions' of listeners lap it all up.
