Joe Satriani

Speaking of music one doesn't really like. But can find interest in the technical side of it. How the song's constructed, production etc. Some kid was playing R&B on the bus today. Actually didn't bother me, despite generally disliking that style. Don't know what he was playing it through but sounded better than your average monophonic tinny phone. Anyway found myself listening to the drums, which I liked. Wondering if I had the same sounds on my gear.

I think a peril of being into creating your own stuff. be it film, music, photography, what ever. You're often annalising a piece to see how it's done. Rather than just enjoying it as a whole. For ages I stopped listening to my favourite guitar based music because I found I was concentrating too much on how they got the sound, wondering about amps used, production etc. I try only to do that deliberately now, rather than instinctively.

Erm. I kinda wished I ahdn't bothered with this thread. Lmao. As someone pointed out, I was asking for a recommendation in order to improve my playing.

Anyways.

I listened to the album three times last night: twice to share with the neighbours and once on the headphones. Each time I heard something new.

Sure. It's dated. The FX sound very 1987, very processed (think Whitesnake, Judas Priest a la Turbo). But I lay on the sofa thinking about how or where he did that on the fret board. I got one new scale out of it, and I could play that in my head before picked up the guitar. Not bad for £8 and three listens.

I don't buy the 'Wall of Death' analogy ^ ... Que? I'm an average guitarist (if that) but I do have an 'ear' for a catchy riff or tune. How can listening to a master be a bad thing?

I'm secure in my punk rock 'n' roll credentials, even after sullying my ears with Satriani.:D

The guy is a genius. Whether one likes the tunes or not, is wholly irelevant. I loath Wagner, but don't deny his talent.

He might be a genius but you couldn't possibly know that by listening to his guitar playing .. fackin toilet :p

"antirocknroll" is U2.

Okay.

I've played the album a lot since I got it. Each pass I'm hearing something which makes me wonder (insert guitarist cliche #3), ahem, how does he do that?

So, I'll never be able to play like him, but just listening to what he's playing, getting the key and fiddling around from there is making me try totally new (to me) things, old things with new shapes and I've dug out an old scale chart ...

That was the point of the OP and buying the album. I'll probably buy another one tomorrow...

...any suggestions? :D

A mate gave me a copy of some Satriani/ Vai jam thing and to be honest it was the biggest ................. of ..................ing .............. I have ever heard.

I have omitted any words that could potentially be construed as offensive by those who are fans of the aforementioned artists work.

Each to their own.

what words are they then? you needn't worry about offending Joe Satriani/Steve Vai fans, because they clearly have no taste.
