Joe Calzaghe vs Roy Jones

Looks like the other one's licking canvas, this one's going to be last man standing.

What about Jones' recent form then, who's he fought and how?

well excited about this fight. Wish it was on these shores. Would have been great to see two legends fight.

Think Calzaghe is going to do it. Roy Jones did look alright in glimpses in his last fight, but his last opponent and Joe Calzaghe............there's a big difference in class.

Calzaghe on points seems the sensible bet.

A prime Jones would have murdered Calzaghe, but this one, I doubt it.

maybe maybe not...

A lot of Americans told us the Lacy would destroy Calzaghe.

Americans like to big themselves up. It's just part of what they do....

;)

Looks like the old 'rope a dope' tactic to me!

Judges have it 27 to 11 on the number of posts scorecard at the midway point. This thread is really going to have to step up in the latter part of the fight, and I just don't know if it has the gas or the heart to go beyond 9.

I would always go with Sugar Ray IMO

everyone knows marvelous marvin was the better fighter.
sugar ray stole that match...

back to this thread.
roy jones would have destroyed calzaghe back in the day.
it'll be a points decision - and probably go calzaghe's way.

eta - did you mea sugar ray robinson?

Some good footwork and neat combinations has meant a few good rounds and it's 19-27 on the judges scorecards

This could be the biggest comeback since Vitali!

2 threads but I think I'll stick to this one.

Can't wait, only 4 more sleeps and a snooze.

This will go 1 of 2 ways imo, Calzaghe will get bursted early, i.e. within 3 or 4 or he'll be hurt by RJJ early, but come back like he did against Kessler.

If RJJ hurts him like Kessler did, he has the ammo to finish him.

w00t.

I predict this thread will be merged with the other Calzaghe Jones thread :)

You mean like a unification bout?

As number stsarted the other one I think that makes it the WBC thread, whereas this late interloper is more like the IBF

What I think I'll enjoy about this fight is both their best punches are on the same side. RJJ's is his left hook and Calzaghe's is his right hook and as he's southpaw they'll both be banging from on the same side.

If RJJ has any of the speed left, when Joe is pitter pattering him and not hurting Jones - we might just see Calzaghe floored a few times.

and Larry Holmes.

Not in my opinion

Larry Holmes was a good fighter, but I'd never ragard him as one of the best pound for pound fighters.

although a good shout I always feel a pfp fighter always has to of fought at several different weight classes, something that can hardly be done for a natural heavy weight like Holmes

dude...the guy only lost out to marciano's record by one fight!
and the late 70s and early 80s was still a tough era for heavyweights - with lots of star names still about - spinks, bonecrusher smith.

c'mon, even in his comeback - who would have thought he lasted the entire distance with holyfield? or mess up mercer?

the man is a legend in his own rights.
he's been tested, battered and bruised but still fights.

and one more thing, how many boxers can knock someone out with a left jab?

75 fights and 6 losses.
that is a tremendous achievement.

Amazing, I'd say. Hell of a guy, Enzo.

Surely a large part of this fight is about what Jones has left inside him? Joe won't be too worried about the big left, he's lost almost none of his movement as far as I can see and being southpaw is going to help, too.

One thing's for sure, Joe better keep his mind on the job or this guy will tarnish that record, for fucking sure.

YouTube reason why

oh yes he was a quality fighter no doubt about it. He's unbeaten streak spoke for itself

IIRC he was about 38 when he had his first defeat, clocking up wins against the like of norton and ali amungst those you have mentioned.

But 2 things go against him for me

1, in the mid 80's when he got beat by Spinks & Tyson, Tyson was an animal. & he was about 20 lbs lighter. between 86 & 88 Tyson was the best HW of all time. so if iwas gonna pick a HW for the best pfp it'd be Tyson (86-88) pre getting rid of Rooney his trainer

2, like I said him being a HW just goes against him. When you consider fighters like Mayweather & Sugar Ray competed at 4-5 different weight divisions

Just my opinion like!
