jobseeking after being stay at home mum

I had no skills, no qualifications past one O level and had a big old break after having my daughter - one break of about 7 years and another of 3.

I have had no problem at all getting work, and good stuff too.

good luck weepiper :)

Maybe not worth the agro of going to tribunral over unless it was a mega highflying job that you needed to pursue your super highflying career or something but possibly worth assertively pointing out in the interview 'I'm not obliged to answer that' or 'you can't legally ask me that so I would prefer not to answer' if you've already decided that you'd rather not work for them anyway just to put the wind up them. If nobody ever challenges it there's no point in the law existing because interviews are quite closed, employers don't seem to get investigated and you'd have to have a really strong case to take it to tribunral.

It's sad that employer's even bother trying to get round the law by asking those things still as the best person we've ever taken on has a child in nursery and no family to rely on for childcare and she has had to take unpaid leave when her daughter was sick but she is still far and away the best person we've ever recruited through conventional interviews and if we'd been naughty and asked her about childcare arrangements and then based the decision on that we'd never have taken her on and would have lost out on someone really hard working and dedicated.

well quite... its such a shame more employers arent more forward thinking and less mysogynistic..

not horrible realistic i think altho there may be exceptions to the rule, we will see how you go on?
Not realistic

I was out of work whilst in HE for 5 years (not the same but still out of the workplace) and managed to secure a well paid job within a month of graduating - and the job had naff all to do with my degree, that wasn't even a consideration.

I'm still here as a matter of fact, and now a director, with a company car

as i said realistic for some and i am talking about out of the workplace totally.
No

YOU said people 'can write themselves off as far as im concerned' - which is frankly UNrealistic

Being in HE is being 'out of the workplace totally' you know.

I think volunteering is a good way to get back in to work, especially if it is in a different field to what you used to do. Thats how I started out as I was very young and didn't have much experience. Also just to get back into the swing of things and get training:)

why the hell do you ask if you dont want personal experiences!

Perhaps you think these things about knitting etc of yourself cos i never said them:rolleyes:

No, you said people should write themselves off- you had....

i forgot to say actually its harder if you are single and running a house its unlikely unless you find some wonderful paying job that you will be better off, you'll prob be better off on the rock and roll.
also you would have to work over 30 hrs a week part time wouldnt be an option.

Blimey

I'm something really special then - single, running a house, found a paying job

Why don't you go and pour your bitterness over someone else hog? It's proving to be empty of any value or truth on here

ha ha so funny is that the best you can do criticise some grammar yawn. Its only an internet forum hardly matters if everything is correct at least you understood the scummy bit thats all that matters.

I'd consider adding semi literate into that somewhere, but i think it's doing enough of a job digging it's own hole. No need of my help.

Lie I said.. while you are criticising others deficiencies as you percieve them...

Oh look Ive given birth and Im still more literate than you! should I write you off before me then?

Not so comfy when the your behaviour is mirrored for you is it?

the way is see it is i posted, some are unable to accept what is said wouldnt it have been better to think oh well thats their opinion up to them, instead of coming back with the usual swearing it hasnt solved anything.

you can always ignore what people posters dont have to keep coming back with something do they?

Do you argue with strangers in the street like this that you dont know?

obvioulsy you dont understand what an opinion is and its only your opinion that it isnt right what i say!

Your way of arguing really helped didnt it. You go and wash your head out, see pointless isnt it, you say one thing i say another goes on.

Think of it this way - someone asks for suggestions as to what they can do to move closer to work after a period out of work. They're trying to be positive.

Apropos of nothing but your experience, you say more or less 'no forget it, you're a write-off'. That is quite a negative attitude, allbeit maybe informed by your experience.

Other people suggest that you may be coming across as somewhat negative about it all, so that rather than offering words of encouragement, you're offering discouragement. You then proceed to argue the toss, which is still quite a negative thing.

Now it may be your opinion that trying to get back into work is a pointless endeavour but simply repeating your opinion doesn't really help anyone who does want to make the effort to do so, does it? In fact, I would hazard a guess that your attitude is what is holding you back in securing any form of employment currently.

Remember Monty Python....always look on the bright side of life......try it, you never know.

What good is an opinion if it goes unchallenged. How utterly bland and pointless that would be.
