JobCentre Plus taking ads for escort jobs

Yes but the fact that's it's in a JC means that if a person saw it, saw the other crap jobs, they may be more likely to apply for it esp. as it seems to be sacntioned by the govt as it's in one of their offices. I think women / men who are desperate may be more likely to think 'i'll apply for this' when they may not if it wasn't in that environment.

I strongly doubt it. If a person decides to work as a sex worker out of desperation, the fact that the government is impliedly approving it is not going to make them feel comfortable about the decision that he or she has made. I think it's a dangerous assumption that most people choose such work out of desperation. No doubt some people are in that position, but others may find that the money or hours suit them better than a McJob.

Ultimately, sex work isn't the oldest profession for nothing .... and I think it would be far better if it was legitimised and regulated so that the exploitation of sex workers was minimised.

I think whatever you think about escort work / prostitution, it's a sad state of affairs that the choice is between a McJob or this.

With that I have absolutely no quarrel at all.

Yes don't get me wrong - I don't assume that all sex-workers are doing that work out of desperation but I do think that the vast majority have not had the same opportunities to make the choice NOT to do it, or are more likely to do it if they run out of choices.e.g finding yourself in a dole office. Don;t forget that some people looking for work may have been on the game before but stopped - then they find themselves faced with an ad like that?
There's no way of knowing how an individual can react to this, which is a point - no research will have been done into the impact of this. as far as the govt are concerned (it seemsto me from them allowing this) - it's better you're selling sex than being on the dole. Some job-seekers might agree !
Escort work is probably at the safer end where there's more control of what the person does, altho I don't know much about it, more about those who work on the street. And maybe the escorts are less likely to be funding a raging crack habit etc. some people enjoy that work & would rather do that than the McJob, I agree.

Let's not forget that sex work is legalised in Holland and under Govt supervision there yet the brothels are run by the most ruthless gangsters who exploit the sex workers horrendously. So it would depend how the British Govt was going to do this.
Not that they seem anywhere near that considering they are bringing in a new part of the CJA where sex workers are going to be imprisoned for continuing to solicit if they don't keep appts for drug treatment and rehabilitation out of prostitution.......

Which takes the debate even further !

I don't think escort agency jobs should be in job centres - everyone knows "escorting" involves having sex with the clients, and prostitution is still illegal in this country. Whether prostitution should be made legal is for another thread, methinks.

No-one really buys into the shit about money is for escorting only, I'd be interested in seeing what percentage of money an escort makes that comes from merely accompanying a client somewhere!

I don't have much time for prostitution, tbh.

good point

Ann Summers sells saucy undies and vibrators and films and such, that you can buy in Debenhams and Boots and Virgin or whatever. The "Escort Agencies" hire out women to be prostitutes. That's a big difference. If the state is seen to be providing support for these agencies it gives then the appearance of legitimacy.

The rationale for the decision in the court case that Ann Summers won was that their business is not part of the sex industry. "Escort Agencies" are.

This all comes from the Ann Summers case. The DWP feel that they have no choice but to advertise these

The escort agencies, on their part, emphatically state their jobs do not involve sex at all.

And, to a certain extent, they are right. You do not necessarily have to be an escort and sell your body at the same time.

By the way, escort agencies involve men in their business just as much as women. Your post implied that only women are involved.

The root of poverty , that's the reason the sex industry exists needs to be seriously evaluated. Economist and the politically motivated must see that the current economic system is not working for all.

The fact that the wage is £90 per hour and many jobs do not get that does show the sad state of wages. Of course its universally and not just in the uk.

Do you think everyone should get £90 an hour?

You know what I mean. Paying for it is.

According to wikipedia, it's not illegal to pay for it either in the UK. Think you may be mistaking it for Sweden's legal status. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution#Legality

Sweden's laws make pretty good sense - criminalising the buyers keeps the selling of sex almost taboo, but having it legal to sell sex means the sex workers can obtain as much social support to get a regular job if they want. Don't know whether it works like that in practice though.

Buyers or sellers, they should just build a huge jail and throw the whole bunch of perverts in it. Single cells, of course.

No doubt you'd moan about the costs of prisons in this country if we did... :p

That's something I've never moaned about. It's a very wise investment.

Don't think that means they should sit around doing nothing or entertaining themselves, though.

Perhaps they could be used for army fodder or something. Send the fuckers to Iraq!

No thanks. If the job's worth doing (and that one isn't) then it should be done by professional soldiers.

Prisoners would be better off doing hard, manual labour. Growing their own food. Filling sandbags. Digging ditches. That kind of thing.

Nah, make the bastards get proper jobs and give almost all of their earnings to the state. That way the rest of the country can benefit.

is it just me here??

the job specifies ESCORTS... not prostitutes... amazing as it might be to some people there are LONELY men and women out there who'd just like to have somebody to talk to over dinner once in a while.. they frequently have more money than sense. OR they're simply lonely and can afford to pay for company.

i can't see the harm in that myself, more power to the girl or boy that makes the job their own and doesn't sleep with anybody but gets 90 quid an hour and the odd free meal.

why did most assume this automatically meant prostitution??

Apparently 'everyone knows' it means prostitution.

Maybe I'll apply and get back to you.

I'd happily have dinner with an old boy and maybe give him a 'lingering' hug at the end for 90 quid an hour, somehow I think they job description might change when you get to the interview process? ;)

What would actually happen if someone applied for the job and it was proven the agency was being used as a front for prostitutuion?

It is £90 On Target Earnings or £90 + extras £££??
