Job opportunity in Costa Rica

big toe crying

New Member
I asked FridgeMagnet if I could post this, I think it is bending the rules slightly so thanks Fridgemagnet. I have a job opportunity if anyone is interested.

A little background. I left the UK about 2.5 years ago to work at a company here in Costa Rica doing their websites on a 6 month contract, after that was over I didn’t want to leave. Over a year ago I started my own company with my Costa Rican boyfriend, in an attempt to be able to fly to the UK once a year to visit family and friends, at the moment it is still just two of us.

We need someone who is really good at writing copy (in English), and knows a little about updating websites (although not essential), and knows the internet well. I can explain further to anyone that is interested.

I’m afraid you would have to pay your own flights, but once here you would get a weekly wage which is crap in UK terms but plenty to live on here, and plenty to spend each weekend on drinking, visiting rain forests, beaches, horse riding, diving, surfing, etc.

The town is very small; a lot of cowboy influence. It is extremely relaxed. The people are friendly and welcoming. You would live with a family which is a perfect way to learn Spanish. It’s daunting at first if you can’t speak any Spanish but you soon learn.

We would like someone for 1 year as this lets you see Costa Rica through both seasons, your Spanish will be good by then, and it will also give you the last couple months to train someone from this town to do all the updating.

If anyone is interested, and could come here in about 2-3 months time, send me a PM with questions and I will write back.

Thanks!

Maybe Urban isn’t the best place to post this what with the high levels of forum addiction :)

I had a few jabs, hepatitis, and a couple others; when I came here I didn’t have much notice before leaving so I didn’t get all the jabs in time. I was advised to take Malaria tablets but there are so few cases that it isn’t really necessary. Plus I think you can only be on malaria medication for 6 months.

Would having to have jabs put you off coming?

The town that I am in is really really relaxed, a lot of sitting around on porches. When I first arrived at this town, my immediate reaction was that I was going to get really bored, and would have to get out every weekend, but I have never been bored – rarely. Even though the town looks sleepy they have fiestas, and waterfalls nearby, and bars.

For veggies it really isn’t that great. The veg section in the supermarket is the smallest section there is. Vegetarianism isn’t very common so a lot of the families haven’t had experience in cooking veg food, although you can cook for yourself. When you say you don’t eat meat, people assume you still eat chicken.

I would love to do that but I can't at the moment due to not having a spare year :( Fab offer though!

Just out of curiosity, if you are talking about writing copy and updating websites, mind me asking why you need someone in Costa Rica?

Wouldn't a fax and an internet connection mean that you could hire anyone, anywhere in the world?

But that's not the point - it's a decent opportunity to get experience of living elsewhere in the world! If I get any more cynical about the radio industry, I might end up taking this up ...

Yes it is possible but I don’t think it would work very well.

The time difference is a problem; if people call me and say they need something straight away and I have someone doing the working in the UK for example than I have to wait until it is daytime there.

I would prefer to be able to talk to the person face to face. The customers should be able to call them directly without having to make long distance phone calls.

Part of the job may be supporting a software system, so someone needs to be here in town, or available to go to other towns to help out the staff.

I want the person to be able to train someone here which they can’t do from overseas.

The wages wouldn’t make it worth while for someone in the UK to do it, but on the same wages here they can live well.

Plus as Chio pointed out it is a nice opportunity to live somewhere else. Apart from teaching English it is hard to find a paid job in non-English speaking countries without knowing the language.

How much does it pay, what are the hours, and is there any training? I know a little about websites and the internet. What I don´t know I think I could learn. I can also write in English, speak English and live in Costa Rica. Send me an email about it, if it is still open.

I sent you an email. It is a full time job. There is of course training. The pay is well above the regional average.
