Joan Rivers outburst on R4 this morning

oh fabulous. The mornings lecturer started talking about this but we ran out of time. I couldnt even get which programme out of her to find it on the bbc site.

But he lives in leafy Norwood and refuses to visit the most desirable property in SW9!

He used to live three doors down from me but moved out a few years ago. He now lives in Streatham Vale. Part of the programme he was plugging was filmed on our street.

I used to quite like the guy but I've heard quite a few dodgy things about him from the neighbours -- can't really go into details on a bulletin board but feel free to get the full story next time I'm in the Albert. ;)

TBH I had some sympathy for Joan Rivers.

only inso far as you haven't deleted all the post counts in your first month like some one else we could mention ;) :D
That wasn't his fault...no-one remembered to tell him not to touch the 'update post count (recommended)' button after deleting old threads.

for what reasons did you find it mirthful?

Because the guy basically suggested she was a racist, but when asked to expand he didn't and flip flopped several times until in the end he gave up.

The man has become a bore, in my opinon. Others my like him, fair play to them.

I once sat next to Darcus for three hours on a to London, he was on his mobile the entire time talking to many various people. I got on the train thinking he was a really cool, thoughtful bloke....I got off thinking he was a sanctimonious twat.

I hate the fact he takes no responsibility at all for where his son ended up. I just read an interview with the two of them on the Guardian website, and it appears that it was the director who pursued the link between his son drifting out of control and Darcus pretty much abandoning him for half of his life. The man's an egomaniac, basically.

Yes he is. He was on BBC London this morning saying the worst racists are the ones who try not to be.

So..what? What do you do? Be a vicious, overt racist incase someone thinks you're trying not to be a racist and gets offended?

always thought the bloke was clever but egocentric
alas he's discovered his ego's a small euro standard ego and not a supersized spam ego BWahahahahaah

I reckon old Darcus absolutely loves to be racially discriminated against - lets face it, in the unlikely event of racism dissapearing the boy would not have a career left.

He has to keep on seeking new ways of being discriminated against (ie, being referred to as black) to justify his existence.

Mind you, his programmes are always quite entertaining. Did anyone see the one where he went to an Indian party to ask for their examples of racial discrimination in the uk, and all the interviewees did was say how they and their families had thrived in the UK, and were doing very well thank you very much, and the reason that West Indians had not was cos they are lazy and useless and want to blame racism for their shortcomings - real hardline rascist shit.

I had to feel sorry for the pompous tit on this occassion - he was speechless. He was really expecting them to say "Yeah, the English are all horrific bigots - ethnic minorities together against mighty whitey, you and me brother", and what he got was far more vitriolic racism than he had ever encountered from any of the whites he interviewed, no matter how right wing they were.

I don't like him, I think he uses race a career however; I'd find it hard to belive anyone loves being made to feel subhuman.

If any of you have (1) got the More4 channel, and (2) are interested in watching Darcus' documentary in question (Son Of Mine), it's just started.

My answers:

(1) Yes, I've got More4.

but...

(2) No, I can't bear the thought of a whole hour of Darcus...

I meant it in the same way as Nick Hornby says that in order to fully enjoy a football match you must have an outrageously bad refereeing desision against your team, people love to be outraged and feel cheated and indignant and have something to scream and enjoy getting angry about.

I didn't mean that people like to be racially abused, just him, cos it "justifies" his career. And he is a very succesfull broadcaster, so racism does not seem to have held him back at all - rather propelled him forward!!

I watched most of that "Son of Mine" thing, and thought Howe came across as an arrogant belligerent gobshite. Him trying to talk to the young guys in Peckham & at the hip-hop night was just utterly, utterly embarrassing. As the Joan Rivers thing shows, the man has absolutely no idea beyond calling everyone else racist, and has no interest in dialogue with anyone. If he was white his media career would have dried up ten years ago.

Can't help recalling him gobbing off in an interview a few years ago along the lines of "I'm a black man, therefore I drink, fight, make babies and don't support them". Talk about chickens coming home to roost...

i thought it was hilarious!

i can't stand Howe, don't know much about Rivers except she's ultra rich, scary-looking and (after listening to this) completely barking! :D

Interesting how Darcus Howe's stock has declined over the years. I used to think he was great in his "Devil's Advocate" days. Now I agree with most people here that he's an arrogant, deluded "gobshite". :D

pretty weirdie documentary, wunnit?

Certianly confirmed my opinion that he's been totally scrambled by the drink (something I have long suspected from his increasingly incoherent and increasingly SHORT columns in the New Statesman....)

He has always liked to rub people up the wrong way, but he also used to be absolutely incredible at exploding other people's bullshit. I still chuckle to remember the grudgematch on Devil's Advocate when he invited on a couple of those corrupt and loopy West African nutcase women from Brent Council whose actions put back racial understanding by at least 50 years ... it was beautiful to watch. I can still remember every inflection of Darcus saying in response to one of them pleading that "I can't be racist because...."

Darcus: "... because you are a HINDU??"
... sighs ... he was a class act in them days
