Sitting Presidents have to be really rubbish not to get a second term.

However, there's a pretty good chance that

a) Obama will be a huge disspaponitment to those who believed the hype.

b) The mobilised vote for Obama will not turn out next time because of this, just the "normal" democratic turnout.

c) The Republicans will mobilise behind a "proper' candidate, rather than the somewhat half-assed nominee of McCain.

Sitting Presidents have to be really rubbish not to get a second term. I would venture to say that if the economy is relatively stable, Obama would pretty much walk the 2012 election. Since the war, only two presidents have failed to win a second term. All the others increased their share of the electoral college second time around.

Something like 98% of Congressmen and women get re-elected for their second term.
