Jay Z thing is a bit racist, no?

WTF? It's got bugger all to do with racism.

Look at this way: how do you think Oasis would go down headlining a rap festival?

^ ^ ^ This!

I would be interested to see how Ozric Tentacles or Hawkwind would go down at a rap club?

Glastonbury has traditionally been one of the most diverse festivals. Would Reading Festival ever bring the English National Opera, featuring a 93-piece band and 11 soloists, performed Wagner's The Ride of the Valkyrie?

This has nothing at all to do with race at all. How do you think it would go down if Boyzone or New Kids on the Block took a headline spot? They have sold a lot of records but are not suitable for that audience. This is why New Model Army are never a supporting act for Cliff Richard!!!

Then what are these "nasty" attitudes you're on about?

Read the thread. I can't be arsed.

I just can't believe you think Jay Z is some kind of corporate monster in some sense that's different from all the other recent headliners. It's flat out nonsense.

is that a valid comparison in ANY way? I wouldn't expect to see Jay Z at Donington or Metallica at Reggae Sunsplash but - thank fuck - Glastonbury is a lot more diverse, and that's to be encouraged.

wtf are you on about, why is it that everyone on this forum is so hypersensitive about race? it's got nothing to do with racism

Dub hadn't you fucked off and died or something.

Jay-z is everything that everyone who complains about rap complains about. Mysoginistic, bling, pimp this, ho that lyrically weak cares more about money then he does the music, uses lots of samples, aroogent. He is toss.

The only exceptions being. Dig a hole, moment of clarity, renegade, the take over, 99 problems, got myself a gun.

Everything else he has ever put out is toss.

Oh and add to the fact that he managed to piss off DMX & llcoolj enough for them to leave def jam and almost everyone on either rock-a-fella and def jam(while he was in charge) have been held back ridiculously makes me hate him even more.

He is toss. and you quoting your normal but dave is always wrong type bollocks is fucking lazy and fucking wrong.

Yes, how could wwe be wrong about someone who rates Idlewild and Reading.

:p

Christ, I bet you even love comfortable retro rappers like the asisine recidivist Jurassic 5 - who are about as exciting and challenging as magnolia non-drip in a tray (with attached safety roller)

If we analysed main of the rawk and pop healiners lyrics do you think they would come out that much better than Jay-Z? For every bling line that Jaz-Z ever uttered, there' s a decent one to counterbalance it out.

Umm plenty of rap & rock acts play on the same bill to be honest.

A good example of this is family values, basicly a metal fest but the following rappers have played: ice cube, method man, redman mobb deep, dmx, ja rule.

Also rage agianst the machine played a few of the rock the bells hip hop festivals last summer.

There has always been a decent cross over between hip hop and metal. Not so much with indie type stuff granted though.

I am over the moon to see that Editor has managed to book Prussian Blue for the next offline in Brixton...

:D - Dave's got 99 problems and Jay-Z is one.

In fairness, Jay-Z is very very good at what he does.

I agree with the OP.

I think Jay-Z would be wicked at glasto and if i had a ticket i would be going to see him. The endless parade of indie wank bands as headliners gets really boring.

Where??? He even admits it.

And the music i be makin
I dumb down for my audience
And double my dollars
They criticize me for it
Yet they all yell "Holla"
If skills sold
Truth be told
I'd probably be
Lyricly
Talib Kweli
Truthfully
I wanna rhyme like Common Sense
(But i did five Mil)

what a guy!

Jurrassic 5 are allright rate one of the rapper quite highly but only tend to listen to em in the summer months, not a crew im fussed by.

How could you forget Kanye West's worst ever song, featuring Chris Martin?

Is it just me that think's Kanye West is shit?

true true he does one with james blunt as well which is somehow nhot as bad as it sounds.

Kanye is okay first album was decent and the odd thing since. I would lioke to point out kanye is jiggas fault.

Oh and i do agree jay-z is good at what he does its just i really really hate what he does. He isn't even funny wiht it most of the time.

Timbaland worked with the odd indie/rock act on his last album as well but that was pretty shit.

dave

I don't see Jay-Z has anything to do with ticket sales... most people go to Glasto for Glasto's sake, not the headliners. If sales are slow, I think it's due to the succession of muddy washouts over the last few years and nothing else.

Gold Digger was ok-ish, and Diamonds from Sierra Leone was ok-ish... hated everything else.

James Blunt? Chris Martin? Fuck me...

Oh stop being so sensible, how can anyone construct a decent argument about whether its simply too muddy? :D

Nah I'm pretty sure if Eminem headlined there'd still be an argument.

Nothing to do with colour it's abut people not liking rap, or being too 'c:cool::cool:l' to like rap, ya know it's just not ironic enough :D

Written quite a long post and still so much more to say on this subject, this is the problem though when you start picking people up when they show examples, about how their examples don't encompass the entire diversity of human existence, people end up writing short essays.

It was a good start.

I expect 4000 words on my desk by tomorrow morning.

heh - at least there is interest and argument. Last year it was
"I reckon Arctic Monkeys will headline."
"Oh look - the Arctic Monkeys are headlining"
"What's that by my foot?"

This year - wooh! Fireworks :D
It's not racist, it's people resisting something different. I thought Glastonbury tried to do the odd different act - I thought that was it's point? It can afford to get the big corporate acts in to play in a field - I'm going to watch him. If the Berlin Philharmonic can do it then I reckon he could.

And I bet Shirley Bassey cost more ;)

The complaint is not that he's sexist or materialistic, or that his music is shite, it just that he's a rapper, and this is Glastonbury. Depressing really. Racist or not, if the rumours of him pulling out come true, it will have the ring of a black man getting hounded out by the white mob.

What do you reckon? have i got the wrong end of the stick on this?

Totally, IMO.

Black artists I recall enjoying on the Pyramid Stage alone include Macy Gray, Finley Quaye, Ben Harper, Taj Mahal and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

I don't know if I'm a representative Glastonbury punter, but while I love blues and old-skool RnB, I'm afraid a lot of modern RnB and rap leaves me completely bored. The chances of finding me in the Dance Tent are also pretty slim, but I do tend to hang out round the Jazz World and Acoustic Stages rather a lot...

If I were going this year, would it bother me that Jay-Z is headlining Saturday night? I doubt it. I might check it out for a couple of songs to see if I could be convinced despite my expectations, if not I'd find somewhere else to go.

I likely wouldn't bother with The Verve for that matter. I never understood why everyone thinks they're so good either.

Diversification is good but the headline slot?

I like Jurassic 5

yeah, but they're dadrap. Beloved by older types who still crave old school rhymes about the roof being on fire and waving their hands in the air (like they just don't care). It's all a bit too knowing, rap music for people who find the modern variety a little too raucous.

I find them mildly diverting, but the fact that they've so much prominence is a little disturbing imo. They're a little like a novelty retro act.
