Jay Z on Jools

Great Documentary. You're forgetting that the number one rapper is a Kanye, who was college educated (dropout) and anti conflict gems, violence etc etc. :p

Kanye is not the number one selling rapper!! Might be in this country but is number 3 in last years sales, state side.

I belive that honour currently goes to for some unknown reason. He is shit.

And if its number one in terms of anything else, just plain no.

TBF, Wayne is a different proposition from 50 Cent, who I think we can all agree is THE representative of all that's wrong with hip hop. We can, right?

I've literally never heard an argument put forward for 50 being a good rapper before. Average at best - his best stuff was out before he was even signed with Aftermath!

50 does sweet hooks and if he has a good beat under him(DRE!!!!) i can just about cope, sometimes.

I also like the cockiness and some of his humour, a lot of his diss tracks are good as well.

He is pretty shit though, rarely like his voice or flow and umm he ain't lyrical and errr yeah.

Apparently his new album is a bit of a return to get rich..... form, which would be nice.

Oh and nelly represents everything bad in rap:mad:(i refused to put nelly and hip-hop in the same sentence).

dave

I never even liked Get Rich, to be honest.

RE: Nelly...I know what you mean, but I can't help but love Hot in Herre, Ride wit me and there was some other one he did...generally total pap though, yeah.

Well come on, he's one of the world's most successful musicians, he must have something. He's not technical, in a way that Eminem or Nas are but his delivery is pretty uniquely laid back and cold. About as close to Big as there is now in terms of being straight up Gangsta (obviously still not a patch)

Naaaaaaaah, don't buy it. Sales don't equal quality and never, ever have in any artform or genre of music. His delivery isn't laid back, it's virtually catatonic and isn't unique at all in that he is just a straight up bad rapper. As for being gangsta - that stopped mattering to me when I was about 13 in any event and, besides, it's not even the case - Candyshop, 21 Questions, making a film with Danny fucking Dyer in it, having a reality tv show etc. etc.

All neptunes beats i think. They know what they are doing. Unfortunately they didn't think of shooting nelly and giving the tracks to someone better:mad:

Get rich and the ost from the film of the same name had the odd decent tune on them.

I fucking love in da club. That beat is ridiculous. Back down is cool as well, although the d12( i think) one is better and many men(again im syrely sure theres better versions though)

Just so we are clear i'm not a fiddy fan, he would be nothing without the shady/aftermath connect. But because he gets lots of dre beats(and others on account of selling bucket loads) i can cope with him.

Just listened to "how to rob" now that is class track!!!!

dave

I don't buy that either, would you love Biggie if he was rapping about Dolphin's safety in the Pacific. :p

Well, I got into BIG when I was about 14 or so and, besides, Talib Kweli, ?uestlove, MF Doom, Mos Def, Chuck D, Kanye etc etc etc don't rap about blunts, 40s OR bitches...there is plenty more to the genre, you know...

Yeah, see, his best work was pre-blow up! It's cwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaazy to me that he is so huge now when he just phones in pretty much every single performance he ever gives. He's straight up about not having much love for the music or the genre or respect for the history...he's like a really, truly awful version of hip hop punk, except it depresses rather than inspires people.

No of course, but some rappers DO have Gangsta Shtick, and that is part of their appeal, much in the same way that I like the film Goodfellas.

I can understand liking gangsta hip hop.

That's still no excuse to think 50 Cent's any fucking good, unless you physically do not posses ears, like kained. :(

Don't get me wrong, there's definitely a time and place for gangsta rap done well - Ghostface is the master in that respect at the moment, I'd say and he absolutely SHITS all over 50 - but same old, same old "I'm gonna kill you over and over again" schtick done over and over again with no imagination, no craft, just "that sounds about right, wack a few G-G-G units on it.....laaaaaaaaaaaaavely: THAT'S the single" balls just irritates and makes me feel all sad inside:(

Yeah, agreed.

some sample I can't remember which right now said:
Yo, I wanna hear some gunshots in the back of my beat, so they'll KNOW how I'm living!!

Yeah. :(

I genuinely find 50, who lives in a fucking HUMUNGOUS house and his gangsta posturing every bit as embarrassing to see as the kids on the back of the bus with theirs. He's an executive with an executive lifestyle and, to be fair, there's nothing to be ashamed in that at all. I'd love to see him do some aspirational stuff from the position he's in now, but he just clearly doesn't give a fuck so he'll be forever threatening to kill people. He's the bloke in the pub giving it "hold me back! hold me back!" when none of his mates are trying to hold him back to stop him getting in a row, basically.

well someone not actually read what i have written.

Umm 50's gangsta credentials ain't bad to be fair to the man. He used to live it properly. Naughty crack dealer and shooter.

There are many many better gangsta mc's then him though. Ice cube being my personal top of the list.

dave

you mean the guy afterwards tapping the strings etc ? amazing, and quite moving music rather than just a technical gimmick - even those posh kooks Stornaway were good , and Norah blinking Jones - top Jools basically .

Yes, that guy. Incredible guitar playing. More skill in his overgrown fingernail than Jay-Z has in his baggy pants.

what's beef?:confused::D

ken i agree i want skills too can't really be arsed if they lived the life (kinda sums it up)

Just don't see 50 cent as posturing.

Ice cube i don't believe though, but man has skills so llows it.

dave

That's fair enough but, come on, 50 wasn't posturing when he first came out but you seriously reckon he is still involved in crime? Fuck no! So why make out like he is? Like I say, he could be an inspiration but instead he's a total waste of space. Not that he owes anything to anyone in terms of being a role model or anything like that, it'd just be a good thing for hip hop, I think.

Ok, don't disagree with any of that.

I mean i could point out the g-unity foundation's work.

But yeah i do agree be nice if he did something else now. Club bangers, gangsta tracks, and beefs do all get boring if that is all you do.

But I really don't think 50 gas the talent or desire to do anything more.
