Jay Z on Jools

Seriously? find me some good jay-z lyrics that aren't on moment of clarity or renegade.(or are diss records)

Jay-z IS NOT A GOOD LYRICIST! He has a danm good flow though and decent enough hooks.

The man free styles all his songs for fucks sake well crafted and thought out lyrics is not what he is about.

I can name 1000's of better lyrical mc's then jay-z.

dave

'yep, flow' would have been more accurate - combination of lyrics and delivery

no no just delivery and cadence.

don't get me wrong he ain't little jon or anything but really his lyricsm is almost non existent.

I know fuck all about it but it's accessible to white boy me because it's got a quality hook, a very neat soundscape and doesn't do the whole bedroom gangsta niggarz/bitches/homo thing. I don't know if it's even 'rap' by most definitions.

This.

The sound is brilliant

Fuckin hate it when rappers use either of those words too much, and they so often do.

They don't say that stuff to "keep it real", they say it cos it makes it easier for the massive conglomerates that publish their music to market it to suburban dwelling white folk, i.e. the 70% of the hip hop market.

p.s. this thread should be renamed "Bridget Kelly on Jools".

I'm not a fan myself but that is a brilliant tune!

Let's face it, Bridget Kelly steals the show.
I agree with this, Bridget Kelly was amazing.

Thought it would have been better without Jay Z. I couldn't understand what he was saying.

Jay-z would never do a song bout bitches and ho's and has never uttered the word nigga in his life.

He would never do that. Ever.

Sick beat though.

Got any evidence ot back that up?

Can't believe there's a hip hop/race debate being gently mooted on here; very sad - should we have separate entrances to HMV and burn any white people not buying regulation indie records?

A central tenet of the genre is that it unifies and transcends circumstance and pigeonholing it along racial lines has always been a stupid and pretty much overtly racist thing to do. Why not object to white people liking Motown? So much of what Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye sang about could be interpreted as appealing only to a black, poor, American audience but it doesn't. Same with, say, Nina Simone. Or why not have a go at Indian kids who like metal, say? Art doesn't have an ethnicity once it's out there; it's to be appreciated by whoever appreciates it in whatever circumstances.

It's hardly a major secret that the majority of purchasers of hip hop are white - figures tend to vary between 60 and 70% - so one would assume that the marketing of the genre would be geared toward that demographic.
Sad Ken - look, I'm white and I've bought and DJed hip hop for years. My point wasn't about who should or shouldn't buy the genre, it was that the negative aspects associated with it that other posters have alluded to are as much to do with commerical packaging to people who live outside "the hood experience" than any sense "of keeping it real". To put it simply, the overwhemingly white hip hop audience are more likely to buy 50 Cent the Gangstar as opposed to 50 Cent the Successful Buisnessman.

Great Documentary. You're forgetting that the number one rapper is a Kanye, who was college educated (dropout) and anti conflict gems, violence etc etc. :p
