January??

Here's a reason: England is freezing cold and miserable during January.

Yep - January is definitely the best time to go away....though I'd throw in February, March, and April too ideally :D

Before Xmas, it's all nice and festive and jolly and exciting. After New Year everyone's cold, depressed and skint. Best time to get away, innit!

They all sound v exciting. Goa and Thailand would be good for guranteed sun!

I would highly recommend Hawaii - Jan and I spent 3 weeks there a few years ago - a beautiful beautiful place, really friendly people. We explored the islands of Oahu, Maui and the Big Island (Hawaii). It's got everything - fascinating culture, unspoilt beaches and nature, mountains, volcanoes, amazing snorkelling etc. etc.

I love Nigeria but I wouldn't recommend it. Pretty fucking stressful at times. If I was to do West Africa, I'd go back to Sierra Leone, I have a special place in my heart for that place.

What sort of holiday do you want?

Intrepid travelling, facing harassment in the street, disease, food poisioning, what sort of food, what temperature, do you need sea, do you want good drugs, do you wish to have a little dance, etc etc...

Guess so.. the current shortlist on a scale from hedonistic to hell is.

Beach - goa/thailand
Ecuador
Cuba
Morroco
Jamaica
Nicaragua
Nigeria

I dunno, who the fuck goes on holiday in Nigeria?? - It kinda of appeals - but would it just end a month of fucking hassle

Syria/Iran/Burma (14th army  ) - like to go to them all but not the right time of year etc.

Such problems!!

Why not go to Ghana, which has (according to my Ghanaian former colleague) beaches as good as Thailand, yet also has the "What? You went there?" factor of Nigeria, whilst probably being nowhere near as rough.

Do people actually seek these things out for entertainment?!

Why not? I don't mean you should deffo seek them out, but I don't think you should avoid them and only aim to places where you get a sanitised version of shit and don't actually see *real* shit... It levels things in your head in my opinion.

One of my mates, who's a development economist, fancied doing a tour of SE Asia after the crash in '97. Not entirely sure what he was hoping for.. but there you go.

I'm too old to be arsed with excessive hassle tbh.. but I don't want a sanitised holiday .. hot place though, booze & drugs unimportant. :)

Somewhere close to or south of the equator, not too much poverty.

I'd visit the south pacific, pick an island or three to visit.

I'm eyeing Syria at the moment. Though I can't come up with a real reason for you to go except that it's

You could do a study of islamic architecture like Richard Burton did on his travels :)

I believe January to be abit on the 'nippy' side for Syria and Iran.

Hmm.. am quite liking the Ghana idea. South Africa is another possibility - trekking, cities and some indulgence in Boer/Zulu war stuff.

I think you should go to Mali and go to the Timbuktu music festival 10-12th January, held in the desert. My friends went last year and said it was the most amazing thing they have ever been to, and Mali was fantastic. If you get bored you can whip across to Senegal which is a brilliant and vibrant country.

Ghana = , I spent some time there this year (with my job with a bit of travelling thrown in) It's easy enough to get around and Accra is by far the most chilled African capital I've stayed in, fantastic place. I am working in Nigeria in January (if I can change it from December...) so you can always pop over and visit :D

moonsi til - How was your Kenya-Zimbabwe trip, I have been thinking about doing this myself! Any top tips? I live in Nairobi half the year so that side of it's ok, just a bit worried about the lone femail thang...
