Jacqui Smith to resign

think the last nice ones were in the 60s when they made it more or less legal to be gay and stopped hanging people.
since then its been knee jerk after knee jerk
can't reintroduce torture and capital punishment so just have to talk more and more tough.
One day we will have a home secretary waving a gun about foaming at the mouth and screaming I am the law:(

Craig Murray, the Britain's former ambassador to Uzbekistan and long-time critic of the government's record on human rights, said on his blog: "Jacqui Smith has thrown in the towel: given her husband's viewing habits, I do hope she washed it first..."
:hmm:

aah, its now 'is to step down' - aka 'is to avoid being pushed'

Hardly news, everyone knew it was going to happen

Thank heavens you knew. The timing certainly caught me out. I felt sure she wouldn't last the pace but as Butchers says seems a daft time to announce this.Seems like they have conceeded the Euro and Council election results.

I can't imagine she has too many fans after the Christopher Galley incident ... leaked information again :D

Do people think the odious Purnell will get promoted? surely he only appears 'dynamic' because the the majority of the PLP etc is so supine or even desires to kick the unemployed, etc when they are down.

Given the last few home secretaries we've had Purnell is an ideal choice. Assuming the actual antichrist is unavailable that is.

Will she wont she? Who knows ..

But then it will be

meet the new boss, just the same as the old boss!

This is, unfortunately, true.

Still, it would be a stone-hearted human being who couldn't get at least a little jolt of pleasure from the end of JS's career. And some might feel a veritable surge of pleasure at the thought that justice has been done to the arbiter of justice.

Bye Jacqi. Fuck off. Don't come back.

no one has 'announced' this tho, its a rather embarassing leak. The fact that brown was about to dump has been common knowledge, even amongst those who eschews anything not 'local'.

It is, however, pretty much a concesson of appalling defeat.

Again thank heavens you are so much in the know about New Labour.

William Hills have closed the books : Ed Balls 2/1 favourite, with Alan Johnson at 6/1, James Purnell 9/1 and Shaun Woodward 10/1.

Which poses the question about who will replace Darling , whose position is seemingly untenable with the expenses issue, as Balls was the favourite for that post as well.

Johnson must be planing his leadership campaign.

Darling only goes if he is willing to go, and it seems unlikely he does.

Brown cannot shuffle him against his will.
