Yeah.I'm all for mocking Cheesy but surely you realise what a dullard you sound here?

I'm still not sure what a genius is though. Can you help me?

i know what genius is - Jack White IS a genius, hardly anyone is, he has it though.

cheesy, no offence and sure you're a lovely lass, like, but how come you have such shit taste in music? it really is quite remarkable. HM should employ you to 'recommend' a CD for the week so people would know to avoid it. .

hmmm....i doubt you have thought that through. I do many threads about my favourite musicians, including everyone below.
my favourite artists are probably:
Prince, Syd Barrett, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Captain Beefheart, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Bjork, Beck, Roni Size and The Libertines.
do you really think I have shit taste?![]()
You have very mainstream tastes but appear to be under the impression that you dont.

i like jack white.
he's a decent singer and an above average guitarist and songwriter imo, and he has a very captivating stage prescence.
He is not a genius as i define the word though, and I can't think of any current musicians who are tbh.
The thing with genius as a concept is that it's hard to define and apply to individuals, in science it is somewhat easier, they are the people who think differently to those before them and break new ground with their innovations.
What makes it hard to apply to most art forms, and music nowadays especially, is that sales will determine success, and most truly groundbreaking acts don't sell records. infact most groundbreaking musicians probably don't get out of their garage because people won't listen en masses to something wholly unfamiliar.
The fact that you've heard of jack white means he is popular, and the reason he is popular is because he plays a style of music that is familiar to millions whilst being slightly fresher sounding than much which went before it - so it sells.
very good. but the difference between jack white and a genius is the same as the difference between developing the theory of general relativity and coming up with the theory of general relativity in the first place.

stewards enquiryYeah.
I'm still not sure what a genius is though. Can you help me?

genius:
noun [C or U] plural geniuses
1 very great and rare natural ability or skill, especially in a particular area such as science or art, or a person who has this:
(an) artistic/creative/musical genius
Einstein was a (mathematical) genius.
From the age of three, she showed signs of genius.
It was such a brilliant idea - a real stroke of genius.
have a genius for something:
to be especially skilled at a particular activity:
She has a genius for raising money.
these are from The Cambridge dictionary. any help?
it would appear to be qualitative not quantitive![]()

its a great post i agree but i dont think a musical genius needs to be making something brand new. You can still be a genius and make drum and bass for instance. Someone else might have invented it, but you can still do genius things in that frame, IMO.
yeah, of course - but to qualify as a genius for me they would have to do something so outstanding and original within that framework that would make it completely stand out from what has gone before, something completely outstanding that wouldn't seem obvious with hindsight, IYGWIM.

I can't see how repackaging the John Spencers Blues Explosion/Black Keys then pretending the drummer's actually your sister equates to genius. And I love Brendan Benson but fuck me the Raconteurs are painfully average.
sweet that you think Jon spencer invented this stuff.
Jack White is channelling Blind Willie McTell through the Gun Club and a lot of stuff from before Spencer thought of it, not to mention the thing that's always bugged me a bit about Spencer is he can't help but make fun of the stuff he draws from and you don't get that with Jack.
but parts of Blood Cells sounds just like JSBE. I personally wouldn't confuse Spencer not taking himself seriously at times with him somehow poking fun at his influences.
More soul and a better drummer!I can't see how repackaging the John Spencers Blues Explosion/Black Keys then pretending the drummer's actually your sister equates to genius. And I love Brendan Benson but fuck me the Raconteurs are painfully average.
