I've reached the point now, in my relationship with Bon Jovi...

I love them, so uncomplicated and refreshing compared to all these tedious indy/hip-hop wankers. Strong songs and attention to hair are not in compatible imo.

It's a stance, a cop-out. It's a way of listening to something you like but you've been told is not Ok to like, so the 'irony' thing is just a dishonesty, a sleight of hand. " I don't REALLY like this, but irony allows me to revel in it whilst pretending to some kind of detachment'.

Utter wank. It's like the whole Guilty Pleasures thing. You like it or you don't. The end

I tend to agree with this on the whole,
it used to really irk me that people thought liking lounge music, or crooners, or even country was an ironic thing when in fact, for me it was about the amazing textures in the music or the dramatic sweep of the lyrics that wasn't just unavailable in indie guitar music but came from another (more adult, it turns out) world.

on the other hand I know it's possible to enjoy something even though you know it's basically crap (cheap costcutter cakes, eric roberts movies etc)

Don't get me wrong (the way Jefe has yet again), I'm not embarrassed of liking any of the music I like, it's more like I recognise that this sort of stuff is "cheesy" compared to the serious minded stuff I normally listen to and I can see the flaws in music like this but it still appeals to me. That is what I mean by listening ironically, I'm not some 20 year old hipster. I'm a 28 year old hipster, I'll have you know.

Living on a Prayer aint cheesy, its about a young couple struggling to cope in an economic depression :p

I was coming out of Ashton Court Festival a few years back, late on a Saturday night, when the awful temporary lighting went out, plunging a huge crowd of people into pitch darkness. About halfway down the hill to the exit is a style, and there was a huge bottleneck, in the dark, of people trying to cross it, get kids over and so on...

Some wag in the crowd shouts at the top of his voice "woah, we're halfway there..."

I don't think anyone failed to join in with the next line. :o :D

Hang on, didn't you used to say you liked Slipknot "ironically"?

I was in a shit heap bar somewhere in Amsterdam once with some mates, tiiiiiiiiired after a few long days when that came on and we started singing gently with people joining in around us until about 20 people belted out the chorus. The internationally universal language of Bon Jovi :)

And then, of course, there's the Bon Jovi Arms, next to the underground on Wood Green High Street.

Everytime we went in there, Bon Jovi were on the jukebox... :D

I like a lot of music that many others dismiss as crap. I like a well crafted pop song. I like the odd overblown bit of 80's cheese rock. Many years ago I would have hid such things away, or attempted to listen to whatever the chin scratching musoes of the day were nodding their bloated heads to. These days I just like what I like. I also find some things I like fairly preposterous. Toto - Africa. What a song. What a piece of cheddar. But it's great. I can listen to it and laugh at it, or I can listen to it and sing along.

I LOVE Africa by Toto. Stick it on a pub jukebox and it's hilarious the contrast between the soaring chorus and grumpy old men :D

Africa is also about the hardest song in the universe to sing along to. Try it next time. Choose your starting octave and keep going until the middle eight :D

Then after that put on Baccara - Yes Sir I can Boogie and rejoice in the kind of orchestration that became extinct after about 1982.

Can someone define AOR for me please? I know it's album orientated rock but that's not very descriptive of what kind of songs you could lump in the genre.

Pretty much sums up how I feel about stuff like that. I've got a great live version of 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' on my MP3 that never fails to get me going and 'I wanna know what love is' is guaranteed to bring a tear to my eye :D

'I just died in your arms tonight...'

'It must have been something you said'

What a band. What a selection of haircuts.

There are some things that I like that I won't even admit to myself. I found myself singing something unforgiveable the other day :o
