It's a stance, a cop-out. It's a way of listening to something you like but you've been told is not Ok to like, so the 'irony' thing is just a dishonesty, a sleight of hand. " I don't REALLY like this, but irony allows me to revel in it whilst pretending to some kind of detachment'.
Utter wank. It's like the whole Guilty Pleasures thing. You like it or you don't. The end
it's more like I recognise that this sort of stuff is "cheesy" compared to the serious minded stuff I normally listen to

Living on a Prayer aint cheesy, its about a young couple struggling to cope in an economic depression![]()

And Winds of Change is about the reunification of Germany and the end fo the cold war!
It's a bit....overwrought...

I think I'm just coming out of my taking anything seriously phase to be honest.

It's lucky he's got a good woman like Gina to stand by him.

You must be approaching your 30s then![]()

I was coming out of Ashton Court Festival a few years back, late on a Saturday night, when the awful temporary lighting went out, plunging a huge crowd of people into pitch darkness. About halfway down the hill to the exit is a style, and there was a huge bottleneck, in the dark, of people trying to cross it, get kids over and so on...
Some wag in the crowd shouts at the top of his voice "woah, we're halfway there..."
I don't think anyone failed to join in with the next line.![]()

I was in a shit heap bar somewhere in Amsterdam once with some mates, tiiiiiiiiired after a few long days when that came on and we started singing gently with people joining in around us until about 20 people belted out the chorus. The internationally universal language of Bon Jovi![]()

on the other hand I know it's possible to enjoy something even though you know it's basically crap (cheap costcutter cakes, eric roberts movies etc)
I LOVE Africa by Toto. Stick it on a pub jukebox and it's hilarious the contrast between the soaring chorus and grumpy old men![]()

It's a stone cold classic.
I dont know why AOR always gets such a bad press, I love it![]()
I like a lot of music that many others dismiss as crap. I like a well crafted pop song. I like the odd overblown bit of 80's cheese rock. Many years ago I would have hid such things away, or attempted to listen to whatever the chin scratching musoes of the day were nodding their bloated heads to. These days I just like what I like. I also find some things I like fairly preposterous. Toto - Africa. What a song. What a piece of cheddar. But it's great. I can listen to it and laugh at it, or I can listen to it and sing along.

Pretty much sums up how I feel about stuff like that. I've got a great live version of 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' on my MP3 that never fails to get me going and 'I wanna know what love is' is guaranteed to bring a tear to my eye![]()
