You may as well not bother with Inversions if you're only interested in the sci fi aspect.

I want to re-read it now, as it was the first one I read and the Culture connection was only pointed out to me after I'd read the others!

I love Excession, me - you can't go wrong with lots of mentalist sentient spacecraft.

Anyway the beauty of inversions is working out the interlocking strands of the story. It's certainly the most subtle of his sf books
