I've had enough of Brixton - I need to get out of here

Don't be so silly. People are entitled to their opinions, even if <gasp>, they are not the same as yours.
Err, hello? H_E_L_L_O? derf couldn't even decide if he was in Brixton or not, hence my comment.

You don't half fire off on the wrong tangent at times you know.

:D

There's a lot of communities rubbing next to each other here too, some good rubbing, some sexy rubbing, some good ol' trouble rubbing, some dull ol' just getting by rubbing, and a little bit of no rubbing at all.

I like this description of brixton. very true

Y'know, rotten shit happens in every borough across this city - I've been living in Brixton for over 15 years, and I've seen lots of good stuff, some bad stuff and whole heap of plain old weird stuff, but I've never felt threatened by the Brixton or felt unwelcome in Brixton and I have never personally suffered any violence or abuse in Brixton (..and I've probably deserved a whack somewhere along the way!).

I found Basingstoke on a Friday night to be more aggressive and openly violent than here.

Exactly right. Great contribution.

That's not the problem. The thing is you've come on here to tell us we're living in a shithole. Predictably, it's a bit of a non starter as far as reasoned discussion goes.

I've 'come on here' to give my opinion. Not my thread remember.

Lots of good things about Brixton
It is a madhouse tho!!!!:D
Which is 90% of the fun - sunday morning 9.00 am after a party walking thru Electric lane, shortcutting home, some Lady form Up the Hill, kecks round her ankles, bent down holding onto a car bumper, sparys a jet of bright yeloow liguid shit along the street - at first I blamed it on the drugs, but then she said "oh sorry love, I didn't see you coming" all her mates laffed like merry-oh
Fucking insane!!!

We lived up Tunstall Rd, opposite the tube in a fally down house - the dry rot would have made the floor collapse had not the drain flood disaster killed it. The kitchen floor dropped by two inches in one year and used to creak like fuck when you walked across it!!! It was a fantastic place to live but I suppose we finally got tired really. For me tha final straw was going to buy some orange juice from Sainsbuggers on a Sat morning and two junkies, a one-legged guy and a one-armed guy where having a fight outside the store and I couldn't get in - the freak show wore me out.
Its quieter out here but I'm an ancient git now anyway!!!!

You saw only scumbags because you were in London, not cos it was Brixton.

Ye godz, does anyone actually read a post or just take the first line and make the rest up?

I WAS WORKING IN COURTS SO YOU WOULD EXPECT TO SEE SCUMBAGS IN A PLACE LIKE THAT.
IT WAS THE SAME ALL OVER THE COUNTRY NOT JUST IN LONDON.

Before you have a go at me my post was agreeing that the area was NOT threatening even if faulty memory made it worthless anyway as I was only near Brixton and not in it.

Please read all the fucking post before opening your fat trap. :)

Same for me. I'm glad I don't live anywhere near Brixton any more. I enjoyed it when I lived down the road a few years back but I value my peace and quiet / living in a place with less crime now.

I can see why people still like it but it's not for me these days.

Brixton is one of the safest places I've lived in. Never been mugged myself - seen the odd outburst of violence but that can be anywhere.

Only downfall is the amount of racism I've experienced from some of the locals...otherwise, it's a great place and I love the network of friends I have there. Wouldn't live anywhere else in London...

I'm happy to slag off Brixton if the criticism is well earned and exists in the real world rather than the poster's confused head (see: derf's comments).

Did I slag off Brixton or at least the area that I'd mixed it up with?
No I did not in fact I said I felt safe on the street walking back to the job with the pizzas for me and the lads.

I'm sorry that faulty memory and lack of familiarity with South London made me make a mistake as to location but I was at least agreeing that it seemed fine to me even for someone who doesn't like cities that much.
I should add that I wasn't driving so wasn't taking much notice of the roads.

I really must try to find the old paperwork. I'll look on the other hard drives to see if there is anything left when i get a moment tomorrow.

The only bad experience I had was getting mugged after your birthday at Mass years ago.

Happy 70th by the way

Is that the one with the "some people can't handle the streets" sample????:D:D

There is madness and mayhem here - no doubt about it, and I don't feel any Brixton residents on here will attempt to deny that some days the place can be a lot to take on, but some people have proven more adept at getting to know the place that Brixton is and not the place that Brixton can appear, hence they will stand up for it when it's dismissed as a simply a bad place to live.

I've chosen to bring up a child in Brixton, and I've never felt fearful for him because it's Brixton.

Life chucks up all sorts of crap, and some people seem to get hit more than others wherever they're sitting when the shit starts to fly.

I dunno if my boys a bit older than yours or around the same age. But I don't think it's safe for teenage boys at all. Please be careful with your boy and make sure he's street wise. It's not safe for them. I suspect that might be a London wide thing. I dunno as I've never had teenage boys anywhere else. Or been one.

Myself personally I've never had any trouble. The only time I've ever been attacked was up in Blackfriars where some drunk in the middle of the afternoon followed my shouting and swearing because I'd 'looked' at him and his girlfriend. He threw beer all over me and threatened to punch my face in. All this while all the suited city types walked on past and did nothing.

Here even the drug dealers have offered to see me safe home as I've staggered up the hill a little worse for wear after a night out.

I am sure it's a London-wide* thing. I've worked all over the capital in schools and boys are much more at risk from violence than girls. I've also brought up two girls and boy to adulthood in Brixton.

*I suspect also Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow etc
