I've been sacked.

What you said about the lack of training/support, bitchiness etc. suggests it was a pretty awful place to work. TBH, if you're doing something like working with kids (or any vulnerable people) it's pretty unimpressive not to get training.

Hope you get something else that is a better deal all round. :)

I was and I couldn't believe they put someone like my room leader in charge.

The alarm bells started to ring when she said to me and Emily "I tell my boyfriend's I'm on the pill when I'm not! Hehe"

:(

It's ridiculous, they all bitch about each other and there's a serious lack of professionalism or consistency in that place. I am just disappointed that I was treated the way I was considering I had no previous training or experience.......they left me in a class with 14 kids, most were asleep but one was kicking (me) and screaming, biting and spitting....It was on my 3rd day there and the next day my manager said "Oh sorry, I didn't know you'd never worked in a nursery before"

!!!!

Very glad to be out of there indeed.

Oh crap, do tell us about it though!

It doesn't matter - only a rubbish shop job. I'll be skint for a few weeks while I find something, but that's no different!

Every cloud has a silver lining. I had to leave evening German classes at the Goethe-Institut in Manchester because they moved to a night I was working. Now I can restart them. I've set myself the rather ambitious target of making my rather dodgy (but existent) German good enough to take a post-grad in Germany or Austria once I've finished uni in three years time.

It's shit being sacked, even by a bunch of arseholes. It knocks your confidence. But as one work environment doesn't suit another will be perfect.

...Of course you'll be lucky to find the perfect one, but you will find bareable jobs. Don't let it get to you. :)

Aggreed. I've argued with friends who speak more than english this point. it may not be a career, but it/s a good way to get yourslef into work, and when you are in work, it can be a lot easier to get where you want to be.

My (current) job doesn't use my language skills (or my university education for that matter) but being able to speak another language definitely got me extra marks for being 'clever' in the interview.

hey SZC

you don't know me cos I've been a bit of a lurker until now :o but anyway, I've kinda followed this story a bit. Very sorry to hear about what happened, but I think you're much better off out of there. Sounds like you kept your cool and they acted like unprofessional idiots.

Good luck finding something new, I'm sure it will come sooner rather than later :)

Report them

Excuse me they left you on your own with fourteen children? Arrange for the local nursery inspector/ ofsted or whoever it is to pay them a visit. You'll feel better (karma) and also be making a valid point.

I've seen some shocking private nurseries (that I didn't leave my son in) and wish I had known who to report it to/ tell.

Bonne chance, et je croix aussi qu'on peut essaie d'obtenir un boulot où on peut utiliser la langue Francais. Et on peut parler Francais bien, contre moi ;)

Tbh, my confidence with working with kids has been totally broken so yes, I am put off.

I much much prefer adults and quiet ;)

At least you now know what you DON'T want to work as! ;)

No worries, SZC, something better will turn up for you, things always work out in the end! xx

Hey SZC... just saw this post and felt I had to post. I'm so sorry about how things turned out for you. Don't let them knock your confidence too much... it sounds very much like the fault was theirs not yours.

I hope you fi :) nd something you really like soon!

No-one likes getting the boot, but you're out of a place you thought was really shit and where you wouldn't have been happy. I'd suggest that you try another nursery, but you sound pretty sure that childcare isn't for you. Chin up.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I really appreciate it. It also confirms that it was not really me who was at fault.

I'm not happy about being jobless again but their little sacking meeting just proved to me what unprofessional and unhelpful twats they are and I am glad to be rid of them :)

Maddalene - They also left me in the class with 13 or so kids running riot, screaming, jumping etc whilst 3 of the staff (aforementioned manager and room leader included) stood at the doorway chatting. One little girl slipped and banged her head badly so I picked her up to comfort her, all whilst I was asking other kids to put the dress up toys away/stop hitting their friends, stop running etc......

I also found out today that my room leader lied to me in that meeting. She said that when my mate Emily was late the other day she rang to say she'd be late and that when I was late, I didn't and that I should have like Emily etc etc.....thing is, Emily didn't ring in.

What a relief I ain't there anymore eh? :D

There are pretty strict rules on how many supervisors there are meant to be per children of a certain age group. I'm not sure exactly what they are, something like 2 babies to every staff member moving upwards as they get older.

Child minders are only allowed to mind a max number of 6 kids and that's with a variety of age groups... not six babies or 2-3 year olds btw. They are breaking the law. Do the parents know?

Well my shoddy manager decided to sack me today. No notice (cos I'm still on probation period) so err I'm unemployed again :(

They made some fair comments - that I wasn't very suited to the job and that working with children didn't come completely naturally to me etc (I agree) but they also gave me no training, support or guidance during my 3 weeks there. They just made negative comments which left me feeling resentful, upset and unconfident about my work.

Towards the end of the chat, they started to slip, professionally, and show their feelings/attitude.....wasn't pleasant.

Tbh, that place has some major faults, everyone bitches about everyone and certain rules apply to certain staff and don't apply to others

Anyway, kinda glad to be out :) but upset about their behaviour towards me whilst I was there and the fact that I'm jobless again :(

Btw, if anyone needs a receptionist or some junior type worker in London PM me yeah ;)

You can allways join me on the Big Issue. Its not great but it gives you abit extra each week.

I'm glad you are not there anymore...you know I had my concerns about that place but I am sorry its damaged your self confidence. With the right support and training you could find that you are good with kids and could enjoy it.

Otherwise what about your long term goals as a nutritionist? You are still going for this arn't you?

I don't know you very well SZC... but the nutrition thing seems to be what you're most passionate about - you should definitely go for it!

((((SZC))))
babe - belated commiserations...

I know you weren't really enjoying it, but somehow that makes it even worse when you get the push - like "how dare you sack me, i'm too bloody good for this place" kind of thing. Been there. You will find something better, that isn't so noisy. :)

Yes but not right now.

My top priority is to find a job, any job, so I can pay my rent etc...

spanglechick - I didn't think I was too good for them, I didn't really enjoy the job itself and I didn't like the staff....so it was partly a relief to be sacked.

The only thing that pisses me off is that I was sacked with no warning or indication of it happening at all. I'm angry that they left me in a situation like that and that they justified it by saying "You were unemployed before you started here, we did you a favour" with an added patronising smile

Anyway, back to the job search...

man that sucks - as maddalene says, definitely report them if they were doing things wrongly. good luck with the job hunt - unfortunately we hire through an agency but if i hear of anything, i'll let you know!

thanks kea.

I feel a bit weird about reporting because the "alone with 14 kids" type incident only happened a few times and then they made a point of having 2 people in a classroom at a time. Also I'd feel like the embittered ex employee by reporting them......which I'm not! :D

They often changed or updated the rules, it was a bit weird.

But hey ho, I'll let you lot know if and when I find something.

:)

I wish I lived in London - the networking abilities of this site are great down there!

As it is, I'm talking to an agency who say they "specialise in bar and warehouse work" when I'm a tiny waif who'd be far better suited to data entry and administrative positions. There really is no work up here - for all they trumpet the "renaissance" of North Staffs business in the local press, all it boils down to is New Look moving their warehouse and Vodafone moving their telesales into the area.

(((SZC)))
I'm so sorry to hear about this, mate.
THINK POSITIVE; every job which don't work out brings you nearer to one which does. I also think that you are more sellable than you believe; you are bilingual, you have a naturally pleasant manner and are good at dealing with people, plus you ain't dim. I'd strongly suggest bar work, or exhibition work, as it would enable you to capitalise on your personality
