I just got a phone call from a local magazine (West Side magazine, for those who live in West London) who I emailed ages ago, asking if I'd be interested in writing a regular half-page column for them! They want columns about local food, some restaurant reviews, technical cookery advice, etc.

It's income, so yes you do, although in the past I've known journos do jobs on the side and not declare it. Dunno if the IR database is better these days tho

Most publications will require some kind of confirmation that a person is self-employed or will otherwise pay their tax liabilities, because if not, the company itself can end up liable/get into trouble for not deducting at source.
