why the hell has he been given 4 1/2 years. He should be given the next world cup and thats it. How many goldern handshakes must be made before the FA realise that they ain't going to stick around for long one way or the other.

dave

He's been given 4 1/2 years or till the end of the WC Qualification, which I think is in his contract.

Apparently, there's a 10 day cooling off period, win bonus and re-evaluation after the world cup.

Interesting article in the Guardian..

http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,,2227964,00.html

One of the FA is having a moan, almost a reaction to the Brit manager wanting a brit.. ...

You can't please them all...

No, you cant, and its futile to try.

As someone who isnt english, one has to ask the naysayers whether any of the English, or even the British, managers has a better track record than Capello at having success whereever he has been (though his most recent incarnation at Madrid was more lucky than successful). Who is better than him amongst the English candidates?

If Dave "Look where Wednesday are now!" Richards was going to argue that the FA should have had Redknapp or Shearer then he is an idiot, though given his record of achievement that probably is already well known.

As for four-and-a-half years, its a long term deal and if he is a success I can well see the FA get criticized (quelle surprise, i know) if he jumps ship after the World Cup.

I think it's more a shock to the system, an Italian, successful and Barwick has managed to get a signature on a contract....

Shades of ' I could have done it better' and appointed a brit.... and still losing in major competitions...

The important part and which should have everyone's attention is the proposed Root and branch overhaul of the system and will the new man have involved in that?

Complimenti!
The millionaire playboys are going to feel the fascist jackboot, which is good news. Then in two years time he'll be off with a barrowload of sterlini.

A few things:

1) They need to continue with the root and branch reform of the system - especially about the money side of things and how it gets cascaded.

2) If it turns out that Capello has got a "colourful" political past in terms of what he's said and who he's said it too, I'm sure that he'll end up "setting the record straight" to the English press who otherwise will use it as another stick to beat him with on the back of a bad performance. As far as race relations are concerned, things are different over here than they are in continental Europe and what might be seen as OK over there is not over here - and the more time he spends over here, the more likely he is going to pick up on it.

3) This is a catastrophic blow to the glamour model industry. How are they going to survive if all of these premiership footballers start getting their acts together, start avoiding nightclubs and end up at art galleries and the theatre? Without the opportunity to snare footballers in nightclubs, there's going to be a huge downturn in the revenues of nightclubs and a downturn in the amount of glamour girls getting paid for kiss and tell stories. That means less money spent on dresses and shoes in shops! This could be the thing that precipitates a downturn in the economy!

Glamour model and PR agencies need to come up with a strategy on how to deal with all of this. Do they look towards another sport? Rugby, Polo and Cricket are taken, though there are one or two cricket boys with a penchant for drinking and glamour girls. Do they go for soap stars or reality TV stars? It's an option.

... and yet you think this is a "rushed decision"?

Capello is ten times the manager of any of the prospective English candidates, as he has actually won things.

How can a manager who is a reknowned disciplinarian have anything but the most positive effect on what must be the most overrated bunch of clowns ever to play for England? After the Croatia performance all of them apart from Crouch should count themselves very lucky if they ever play for England again.

His evident contempt for the Press is something that is long overdue as well.

Capello is shrewd enough to avoid having to speak to the press and send Baldini to put forward the 'party' line..

As For Dave ( man of the people ) Richards, I regard myself as a custodian of the game who tries to do his best for the game. If that means walking out of meetings or objecting to conference calls about the England manager's job, then I'll do it."

Regarless of the wisdom of such actions. I had aquick read of the Sheffield forum... woo, that man is not liked... words like Bankruptcy, self aggrandisement, and ... the lovely part....

In July 2006 Richards was cleared over allegations of covering up illegal payments whilst at Sheffield Wednesday.

By his mates at the FA... LOL

we will win nothing with him in charge , if you disagree put your money were you mouth is and bet me , drop me a pm we can sort a long term bet out through a 3rd party . i no i will be right do you ?

Sadly I have no credit card or means to bet online, but if I did, i would put 100 pounds on him getting us to at least the semi finals of WC2010.

pawn, who would you like to see instead of him who would have won something?

Mourinho would have been my first choice he is a leader of men , Mourinho is the kind of man who i would have wanted to go to war for he would have the hairs on your neck standing up and you would feel 10 foot tall before you charged into gerrys machine guns .

renegade i will match that bet , if you can get a pre payed credit card sorted we can sort that out , no rush .

please dont get me wrong capello is top of the tree when it comes to managers but the mess english football finds itself in requires more than he possess's .

You do know Mourinho turned them down, right? I agree in terms of inspirational people he is (apparently) better than Capello, but he is also far more likely to jump ship when "big" clubs come calling and throwing cash at his feet.

I also think a manager with such an impressive track record (though thats not to say some of the media havent already started questioning it) is of vital importance to fixing what is wrong with English football, though much of what is wrong - the influence of the Premiership and the Champions League - is out of his direct control. He is exactly the sort of man to kick some sense into the players, though.

Mourinho was using the situation to get clubs up and running .. who was doing the chasing, Mourinho, not the FA... Mourinho, on a plane, coming to London,, his agent on the phone, all the stories leaked to the press..... too much hype...got himself back into the spotlight, that's all... He might have been the tabloids favourite but...... what has he won..... in Europe.... Porto. with Chelsea good guy, short term but.... he had a big fat wallet to buy as he needed and fell out when he couldn't spend more money.

If your'e desperate to get a bet, try Paddy Power, they will give you good odds and you can tell us all how much you won.. or lost.

Don't know that much about football to be honest.

But Capello is it apparently, yes.

So the English FA have hired an England Manager on an enormous salary who CANNOT EVEN SPEAK ENGLISH ....

Well that is certainly going to help .. excellent .. a result ..

And according to my partner, he is a shiite manager anyhow and was carp when he was in Spain ..

England are doomed ..

He wasnt that crap, given that he won the league (admittedly, only with a huge slice of luck and after being demonstrated to be wrong over Beckham, but he did win it).

Who would you have picked?

Don't really know much about football.

But one that could speak english, has proven track record of results and respect of players n pundits ..

Possibly the special Jose one .. don't know why that negotiation stopped, perhaps there is a valid reason .. Scolari ? not perhaps does not want it ..

Me I just get dissapointed when england play, all those multimillionaire footballers who cant seem to beat any team, even struggle against teams of part time firemen and policemen. Why are they paid all that money I wonder.

Often just a disgrace to the nation !!
