Italy vs Ghana thread

Awesome match so far. The Ghanians have got such pace, power and energy. Every time they went at the Italians early on it was like a tidal wave of white shirts overloading the Italian defenders.

I reckon the Ghanians' stamina will start to count. If they equalise around the 65th-70th minute then I can see the Italians becoming really unstuck.

The clinical nature of the italian attacks are a beauty though too, those little slide rule balls through after a measured build up. Why do they always seem to have a striker who is big, skillful and quick all at the same time? Instead of big or quick...

What impresses me about Ghana is they have the belief in each other of a really good side. Rolling it arround all over the place to each other. Essian just had a do!

Big up Ghana! They're playing like heroes!

I love this game!! Ghana are passing and getting it forward really skilfully, and Italy are playing excellent football as well. Really open game, end to end stuff  x 10,000

i think despite all the shit with the league, italy are going to be back to their best for this tournament.

they were pretty good, ghana never looked like scoring, rock solid defence from the italians, two well taken goals, the second a defensive error but well taken nonetheless...

Fantastic game, fair play to Ghana, they passed really well and Essien was brilliant ... apart from scoring :(

Italy were better and took their chances -- superbly.

Best game of the 2006 World Cup so far!

That essien wants shooting, the little bastard, how he got away with that forearm I'll never know.

As for that kuffour, the cunt, since when was this 'anything goes as long as the ball isnt play' rule introduced ? Fifa want to ban the twat for three games.

Good game though, marred by some shocking finishing and the Ghanian keeper may rival chilavert in the nutter stakes.

God, how I love the Italian national side when they play like that. An absolute masterclass. Score, then keep the opposition miles from the goal and hit them on the break.

Football with intelligence and organisation. Marvellous.

They are the best side in the world to watch I think, they have something incredible about the way they change the pace of their game. They look good do this team, not stifled like they sometimes seem.

bah

even at 1-0 that was still on, but they ran out of energy and ideas at the end and in fairness 2-0 was a deserved result

toni looked the business, and even totti didnt flatter to decieve this time, but i dont think any of the other favourites would be that intimidated by italy and - based on respective performances today - i could see the czechs beating them.

True. Won't be easy, I'll concede.

Well deserved win for Italia..

Having started out fairly neutral i was willing the Azzuri on in the end. 2 reasons:

Motty and Lawrenson's awful stereotyping of Italians and Italian football - "They`ll shut up shop now and defend/cynical, clinical Italians etc"

and

The thuggery of some of Ghana's players. typified by Essien - a horrible little cunt. Good player as he is why does he feel the need to stick his elbows into every face that comes his way?

Italy v Czech Rep should be one hell of a game:cool:

I've never liked the Italian team. Bloody boring. I'd rather watch Brazil, the Netherlands, the Czechs or (dare I say it, even though I dislike them) argentina.

I think there is something in that in some ways though. I know exactly what you mean about Lawro, it's like they have a script they use for the world cup, it never alters but, one of the things I always love about watching the italians is their defence. It started with Baresi, who I adored for the way he could start a move after the most beautifully timed tackle or interception and could marshall and control from the back. There is something special about an italian defense that is almost intangible.

Mind you I was always a defender or keeper so part of that makes sense. I remoddeled my own game at about 14 and decided to try and play like baresi and actually became a not bad centre half instead of a willing runner who wasn't really any good at all. Timing, seeing the out ball and positioning is all. It's why I quite like Ferdinand

but then we get...

*more italian defender porn....*

Maldini...

What more can I say...:) - He exemplifies the grace and precision and utter concentration of the great defender. We deify Bobby Moore, but I saw these men play and it was beautiful...

Caught the last 1/2 hour and I thought that the Italians were easily the most skillful team i've watch so far. Missed Sat/Sundays games.

Whats difficult to judge in this stage is how they will fair against sterner opposition. In the bit I saw Ghana were playing 2 at the back which made it really easy for the Italians to nearly get a goal by hoofing it up the wings.

Its interesting how there has yet to be a single upset. You could say Japan getting beat was, but that IMO was a fairly even game on paper.

No, they are rubbing their hands in glee. If it all goes to form, they will be making the most cash ever.

Err... why? At the last world cup I put down an accumulator on what I thought would be the group winners. Of course they were virtually all wrong. There must have been tons of people who did similar. This time around those accumulators will be far more likely to pay off.

Damnit I got invited out at the last minute before the match and missed it, then my friend didnt turn up until 9:30 anyway!

A wouldn't disagree with that at all, but I do also think that against such great opposition as Italy, Ghana gave a pretty good account of themselves, and never stopped going forward. Their passing was better than England's at times, by some way! Unfortunately for Ghana though, they were outclassed by the masters ...

Someone's having a go at Essien earlier up for use of the arm, which I may have missed ( ) but from what I saw of him, he was Ghana's best player ....
