Italian Riot Police @ Roma

quite a bit as it happens

so you'd know that Linfield fans are horrible cunts and despised by even the predonimantly proddy supporters of Larne. I can vividly remember one game where some Linfield fans were sending missiles onto Larne fans from the changing room roof.

The police ignored the advice from the UK police and let their scumbag compatriots hurl coins, piss, gob and even puke (!) at the Welsh fans below. If they complained, they got battered.

erm.....I know I know fuck all about soccerball and that - but they put opposition fans above each other?

That's insane - that footage is insane and it makes the game look insane. Everyone behaving like animals - do kids get taken to these games?

But doesn't this happen every week in Italy?

Certainly not being reported much in Italian media (well, not compared to the hysteria over here), so obviously not that big a deal over there.

All a bit ott, imo.

that linfield versus pretty much anyone bar glentoran and cliftonville* is pretty much a standard game with no more violence than you would see anywhere else

that you are comparing a linfied / larne love-fest to last nights trouble is truly fucken hilarious tho

* and even that has paled in comparison with cville / portadown games in more recent years

As if to compensate for the aggro, the camera kept picking out glamourous italian women in the crowd. That's sort of normal, but last night was ott. Creepy job.

camera man was a bit special - for the united goal they zoomed in on ronaldos run on his shorts and they prety much missed the 2nd roma goal from every angle...

i'm talking about games in the early 90's.Once I got past a certain age it wasn't so much fun to sit beside sectarian wee pricks who'd happily give me a kicking everyother day of the week. And Larne versus Linfield was not a love fest on a number of occassions, especially as some of it was fuelled by loyalist feuding. Larne has always been more sympathetic to the Glens.

ohhhh the early 90s.... fuck.. yeah 'the bad old days' - the linfield mob would swing into town mob handed- remember when the fan accidently let the dog of the lead and it got on the pitch.... thought it was gonna get nasty in the second half of ballymena versus larne game one time "I ASKED FOR BOVRIL NOT TEA!!!' - ground went deathly silent after that - jackie fulelrton described the scenes with horror - it was alright tho a quick thinking girl behind the counter had a bovril on hand... fucked up days and no mistake

respect soldier

proper aggro

It's what they did at Italy vs Wales and the police simply ignored the stuff pouring down on the Welsh fans. Some Italian fans were just pissing over the edge onto Welsh familes below. My mates who went said it was absolutely *horrible* from start to finish. They were treated like shit.

What a bunch of cunts. :(

I wasn't claiming kudos about it, especially as I was about 10 and my role in the pitched battle was being moved the fuck as quickly as possible by my dad. The worse scenes were at home when my mum went apeshit about it and threatened no more Larne matches.

I have my own thoughts about what constitutes real politics and have alot of criticisms of the anti capitalist movement but atleast I can say I was involved on the ground whilst you were doing interviews for Newsnight, the sad fact is your politics have never moved past a vague anti corporate/mainstream ethos.
Far from just doing TV interviews (which are a useful part of any activist campaign), I was also busy informing football fans about their rights, getting thousands of 'Bust Cards' printed up, contributing my work to the Kick Racism Out Of Football campaign, trying to make linKs with the broader anti CJA movement, running a grass roots anti-racist fanzine and flogging it on the terraces and doing my best to make sure that the police wouldn't be able to take the piss out of my fellow supporters.

What's been your contribution to football, Mr 'real' politics? You don't even go to games, for fucks sake.

no offence but my politics didn't revolve around football, but fair fucks for what you did, but lets just say your politics haven't really moved beyond superficial touch ups. You don't have any notion about class struggle and think eating in Burger King is embracing corporate capitalism, so it's probably best you stick to football politics.

On balance, I'd rather spend an evening getting battered by italian coppers than have to sit through 90 minutes of any irish league game.

having done both I can safely say that Carabinieri are better craic than Crusaders who my mate dragged me along to watch a month ago.

Yeah! Right on! You're going to change the world! From your bedroom!

Keep on dreaming, sunshine.

Have you any thing remotely relevent to add to this discussion about football policing?

i want to hear more stories of the days when linfield used to turn over larne and do £32.89 worth of improvements so revols ma used to batter him

some nasty footage, but English fans must know by now that other country's police have less of a softly softly attitude to hooligans than the English police. The English fans are treated with kid gloves in this country so when they go to Italy/France they get their arses kicked. The French World Cup police were the same as the Italians last night: if you want to cause trouble we will put you in hospital

Bollocks. Italy is unbelievably soft on the ultras, their fascist flag waving and shit stirring. They should be persecuted.

That is certainly true, but there is also an element of truth in what copliker says, and (perhaps linked) one also must look at the equipment of the Italian police shown during the scenes last night - did anyone see a riot shield? or any of them wearing protective overalls? The police officer who died in Sicily a few months ago apparently didnt even have a protective vest, and it may well have been true here as well.

It looked like they had just been given a helmet and a big stick, which one might well suggest will inevitably lead to what happened - they cant stand there and protect themselves from missiles and the "braver" supporters running at them in any other way than hitting people, or charging in and hitting them. The provision of proper equipment would allow different, less violent tactics to be used (can anyone remember the last time equally brutal scenes occured in the UK?), though of course you cannot totally eradicate the risk.

At least the italian fa had the balls to go through with juves punishment , something our corrupt fa never had .

Yep, I seem to remember Swindon got a bit of a hiding for some dodgy dealings but Tottenham got off comparatively lightly for a similar offense. Can't recall many of the details, but the general opinion was that the FA didn't really follow it all through properly.

good points esp about no armour. for Italian police it seems attack is best form of defence

copliker: i think the italian police probably love the political side of the ultras so they leave that well alone, but i'm sure they get stuck in if violence erupts

For the 2nd successive away game in Europe Man Utd fans have caused trouble and needed the police to get involved. I guess they will get another small fine from Uefa.
