Issues hyped up by the media then forgotten

The thread title asked what issues were hyped up by the media

...and then forgotten. I don't think anyone ever 'forgot' the issue of nuclear holocaust, just managed to better assess the risk.

Besides, as has been pointed out - there was no 'hype' about nuclear conflict; if anything large chunks of the press suppressed the idea that it might happen to serve the pro-nuke lobby's purposes of building more of the things.

Your comment about AIDS is pretty flip tho - try explaining to all those people who have died of AIDS that it was all a big hype.

You don't hear much about televangelists these days; I blame the Muslims for being the new religious figures of fun. Presumably they are still broadcasting on one of the hundreds of satellite channels.
