Israelis being proud of their parsimoniousness

How the hell do you know that? Done the world genetic survey of jewish people, have you? Don't think there were many arabs about that part of the world in biblical times (palestinian or otherwise).

Conversely, if you're refuting Azrael's claim, then how the hell do you "know that"?

See, not enough to have a pop at someone's claim, you actually have to do the work of showing why their claim is pants, otherwise people will start pointing at you and laughing. :)

They tend to do the same if you simply criticize other people's arguments without offering anything substantive of your own. Makes you look like a bit of a kvetcher, almost a yenta. So, do you actually have an opinion on this issue or not?

yeah, that's right, we're the ones you're allowed to stereotype as stingy, without being considered anti-anything.

On the "racial" provenance of the Jews compared to the Arabs and how that entitles either party to claim dominion over the lands comprising Israel? My opinion is that the jury is still out, and will always be. As for historical and religious claims, I believe that both parties have some claim on the land.

If "seanie" had made an argument I would have critiqued it. As it is he asked a few questions and made a rambling statement of dubious accuracy.

As for people pointing at me and laughing, if it happened it wqouldn't bother me much, although I'm sure it's something you care deeply about when it happens to you.

I've seen Herr Sheckelgruber's work and while technically proficient, its rather mundane in a cutesy little landscape way. Brillant it was not.

I know. Irony.

And as for Scottish Jews....
We had a Jew, a Scot and a Dutchman around a table in the pub last week. How we laughed (as we licked our pint glasses clean).

in my opinion, it wasn't antisemitic of brainaddict to bring this issue of the perceived thriftiness of jews up at all.

i think there's a definite over-reaction with the cries of antisemitism in this thread. antisemitism MUST be accompanied by true hatred. antisemitism isn't 'accidentally curious seeking information and knowledge' as such thoughts are part of a necessary process to gain understanding of 'the other'

there's no way that discussing cultural differences will always leads to racism, or that such a discussion belies a racist nature in the mind of the instigator - this is just another example of a natural curiosity for the world which surrounds mankind, and for the creatures and things in it.

and at any rate, this child-like curiosity has led to a fascinating and enlightening debate.

one thing to remember about Israel, is that employment, and therefore the chance to make money, is not brilliant at the moment. for example, over 1/3 of children there are living below the poverty line. no doubt these harsh conditions contribute greatly to the modern Israeli's common-sense regarding money and goods. there are constant charity drives to ensure that the poor are provided for.

and as for Palestine, without Hamas's social wing organising education and social services, food-kitchens, etc, things would be even more desparate than they are now

charity is a complete necessity in both Israel and Palestine during these turbulent times. as real peace draws ever closer, both sides will experience an upsurge in investment providing employment, thus increasing individual wealth and health.

ps. perhaps you should get yourself another yiddish dictionary. your insults are in no way as good as Panda's!

Yeah well, Panda's a Jew and I'm not (although naturally some of my best friends are). I do agree that Brainaddict is not really an anti-semite, although his perceptions are quite obviously influenced by stereotypical preconceptions--just as those of white people who "naturally" perceive black people as having a natural sense of rhythm are. I'll tell you one thing though: if he'd posted this "child-like curiosity" as you accurately call it on an American message board, he'd have been flamed to toast within seconds. To say there is zero tolerance for anti-semitism here is the ultimate understatement, and a bloody good thing too.

The truely ironic thing is that if he had embraced some of the more adventurous work of his time, he would have been a better artist. If he had sold a painting or two he probably wouldn't have rampaged through most of Europe and part of Africa.

I'm serious, Violentpanda, I can't let you get away with this. Brainaddict's a child, perhaps a fool, but he didn't mean any harm and doesn't know any better. You do know better. You know that when someone says something like this, you must put them right--nicely or not, as you prefer, but you *must* put them right. You seem to prefer to lend them aid and succor. There's a thing that I'm trying *very* hard to resist calling you, I'm sure you know what it is...

Jesus, you're even more boring on here than on the the 'proof of god thread'.

Yes, but that was Jewish, decadent art...
