"Israelis are rude" - myth or reality?

Jaed: Never said you did claim Israelis are diseased or contaminated. But the attribution of dirt to a particular ethnic group has some particularly unpleasant precedents. You don't like me pointing that out, but it's true.

Now it's quite possible that a lot of the Israelis you happen to have met really were a bit grubby. Some national cultures undoubtedly place more emphasis on personal hygiene than others. But I would not predict Israelis to be grubby in general. People from hot climates usually bathe/shower a lot. It may be that you've met the Israeli equivalent of crusties: young middle class people going through a lackadaisical phase.

I'm not attributing this to an "ethnic group". I'm saying that all the Israelis I've *met* have had a dubious standard of hygiene... I'm pretty sure there people who are Israeli that are as clean as a whistle. Just wish they'd travel outside of Israel...

That's a nice prediction. Just wish I could meet some Israelis who would live up to it...!

having spent time in Israel I would say Israelis are most definately brusque - but I wonder how much of this is down to being native hebrew speakers - they seem rude but it's just their way of communicating - in much the same way as new yorkers - very direct. I've no idea of their personal hygene - thats just sounds like saying all indians stink of curry.....absurd.

but still they keep the stinking towel heads in line so thats ok then eh? :o

My experience of Israelis is limited to meeting academic and other middle-aged, middle-class types through work in a sort of meet-and-greet capacity. I have no recollection of them being distinctive in any way. The only national group who made an impression on me hygiene-wise were the Japanese, who tended to be exceptionally clean and neat-looking compared to everyone else.

I don't "hate" Isrealis, I've just found all that I've met are dirty and rude. There's a major difference (IMO) between "dislike" and "hate"...
I've spent 9 months in Israel and your 'dirty' allegation does not ring true at all. In fact it sounds like a deliberately mischieveous allegation. What's your experience of Israelis?

From meeting them in bars and clubs in London, from renting out a flat to some, and from meeting them in resorts in various countries...

At least I know my perception of Israelis isn't 100% accurate, which gives me hope...! :D

You're so right there.

Strange that people out at bars and clubs or on holiday should be 'dirty'

I think someone should start a thread on UK Politics - "Asians: What do you think about them?"

:D
Go on then. Why not?

NB, this thread title wasn't an open question - it referred to a specific characteristic someone had encountered

Nah... "Chavs: What do you think about them?" would be a better flame-fest... :D

Never had a problem with Israelis, either in Israel or anywhere else.

It does help you if you can cuss them out in Yiddish (not a lot of Israelis, or Jews for that matter, still speak it, but we all know some cusses :D ) if they start off on the wrong foot. :)

LOL! If there ever was a language that is perfect for insults then its Yiddish :D I've been so shocked at just how many ways you can insult people with it.

I never really met a rude Israeli when I was over there. In fact some were hospitable to the point of bringing out free coffee and tahini to our group at a restaurant. I loved it.

Yeah, I live in a jewish area of london and for the most part they are rude, They wouldn't put themselves out for other people, ifyswim.

Have to agree with this whole heartedly (I also live in a Jewish part of London, opposite a synagogue infact and have been boxed in several times while people go into the synagogue). Little consideration for other people.

Err, those are Jews, mate, not Israelis, unless you happen to know they were from there or whereever then they are probably British

I'd genuinely like to hear some real opinions on this matter. Are Israeli's rude, if so, why, and is this a phenomenon (if true) that is unique to the country with the blue and white flag?
My parents went to Israel for a tour about 10 years ago. My dad said the Israelis treated non-Israelis worse than shit unless those non-Israelis held US passports...in which case they were treated like royalty.

take from it what you will.

I've seen pretty atrocious behaviour from groups of Israelis in Manali and Goa - shouting at locals for trivial reasons, aggressively haggling right down to the last rupee, playing trance all night and generally acting like they own the place.

And why not? Who can stop them? They live!

When I was there most Israelis (not all of course, some were very nice) treated everyone including me like shit no matter what passport they held. I think they probably treat each other like shit also.
