Is this your England World Cup squad?

That had more to do with there being no decent english right backs, with neville out and johnson not really playing for chelsea then richards being any good.

come off it dave, he was brilliant when he first played for england.

carlton cole is going to eat those championships alive. He is unplayable at the moment. People who judge him by how he played a year ago are making a massive mistake. Honestly, Crouch for Cole? You must be absolutely mental.

You can't have a perpetually injured back up player. Woodgate isn't reliable enough.

dave

You're right of course, but given Hargreaves is being called as a shoe in if fit, Terry has been injured a lot the past couple of seasons, Rio hasn't had a run of games or at least convincing games, Jagielka is out, King is a once a weeker, Lescott is struggling to settle or being made to look as if he is, I think a convincing run would give him a chance in the same way Cahill is getting a mention..?

Not that it's hugely relevent, but was it Martin Peters who hadn't made his England debut until May 1966 but played in the final? There's bound to be losses of form, form players and injuries before the WC starts..

was it not hirst?

Hmm might be both!. Hirst got his debut in 66 as well.

Hargreeves is a shoe in because there simply isn't another genuine defensive midfielder that is likely to get called up. Scott parker is pretty much the only other one and he dives in far too much for international games.

Re: worst England player - has everyone forgotten Graham Taylor's time as manager?

Carlton Palmer
Geoff Thomas
Andy Sinton

etc.

The only thing Huddlestone can murder is a buffet.

I can def see Crouch for C.Cole.
Only 3 central defenders in that 23 so I'd leave Bent behind for Lescott.
J.Cole for sure, but for Beckham or Ashley Young . . .
Can't get excited about the 'keepers, tbh.

Jenas has well and truely tumbled . . .

Agreed, would hav thought J. Cole would be a shoe-in, when fit obviously. I guess the likes of Money Bags et al being there is for cover.

I don´t think you can argue for Bent´s recent records. You can argue that Tottenham have the worst supporters on the planet for almost ruining him though.

* Im a miserable ethnic Scot - so this a caveat before you reads this

I genuinely think that Rather than winning matches for Ingerland , both Terry & Beckham will cost you, desoite all the patriotic bluster - I used to think that about Rooney, but hes been sorted out by Fergie and has got a decent hed on his shoulders now

Few can touch Woodgate when hes fit - but as you said, hes very injury prone - a def if hes had a good run up and isnt carrying anything

with regard to goalkeepers - Im not convinced by any of them - maybe get Harper involved somewhere along the line ? Maybe not as big name as the others, but a decent experienced professional and may well surprise, albeit hes in the chumpionship nowadays. Probabaly too late though - James is still the best keeper you have on your books .

Owen is finished speed wise , so hes shouldnt be in the reckoning

Odd personal problem but anyway its worth remembering that david dunn was going to be the next gazza and cherno samba the best striker in the world ever and jermaine pennent was going to be amazing and loads of others.

This is the English press though. Rio Ferdinand was going to be our Beckenbauer/Sammer, and Joe Cole our Zidane, but whilst both very good I wouldn't say either has reached greatness status yet. For similar reasons, I'm going to be reserved about someone like the much-vaunted Jack Wilshere.

To be honest, it's fairly rare for teenage prodigies to fulfill the potential they're spoken of having. Ryan Giggs would be an honourable exception in this.

From here - they've picked 23, is that right?

By position (no particular order):

Ben Foster - Manchester United - G
David James - Portsmouth - G
Robert Green - West Ham United - G
John Terry - Chelsea - D
Ashley Cole - Chelsea - D
Glen Johnson - Liverpool - D
Wayne Bridge - Manchester City - D
Rio Ferdinand - Manchester United - D
Wes Brown - Manchester United - D
Matthew Upson - West Ham United - D
James Milner - Aston Villa - M
Ashley Young - Aston Villa - M
Frank Lampard - Chelsea - M
David Beckham - LA Galaxy - M
Steven Gerrard - Liverpool - M
Gareth Barry - Manchester City - M
Michael Carrick - Manchester United - M
Aaron Lennon - Tottenham Hotspur - M
Theo Walcott - Arsenal - F
Wayne Rooney - Manchester United - F
Darren Bent - Sunderland - F
Jermaine Defoe - Tottenham Hotspur - F
Carlton Cole - West Ham United - F

Id have Lescott, Shaun Wright Phillips, Joe Cole,Jagielka.

Leave Brown,Upson,Beckham,Lennon

Commentator's cliche alert...

Beckham has to go, for when the proper wingers don't deliver or are marked out of the game. He "brings something different" and always "guarentees" quality long balls. Cliches, but true.

Edit: And Glen Johnson only goes for the special games - the ones where the opposition agree not to attack down the left.
