Is this World Cup the least hyped-up on the street?

Back when I lived in Wales most people did seem to support England in the World Cup and cricket etc., mind.

Its down to Roy Hodgson. As England manager most people think that he just runs the team, but he will have a team behind him who teach the players how to handle the media.

Roys first job was to get this team to neuter the press. Telling them, we dont want articles and bulletins on how we are going to win. That only puts pressure on the players and raises the hopes of a nation. Journalists at this WC have seen White Boards in the training rooms that have bullet points that the players are told to remember, including "We're a team", "We respect the opposition but we are here to do a job", "Everyone is ready, whether we are picked to play or on the bench". Withness the most jingoistic newspaper out the, The Sun, with their hashtag of #dousproud. No hype, no expectation, no promises - Roy has successfully managed to neuter the media and have them present the team as one that will do their best, but there are no promises.

As such, the expecations are lower, and without the press pumping memories of '66 in our heads we've become more muted too.

Roy is a genius.

That and also it's quite some time since England have had produced a tournament performance that offered much promise for the next one. I mean 2012 we played each game like a Ryman League team in a 3rd Round FA Cup tie, 2010 we were totally abysmal and rightfully dumped out by the first good team we faced, 2008 didn't qualify. You have to go back to 2006 for a team that put in a decent performance and reasonably offered hope of being competitive in the final stages.

You appear to have been living in a different world to everyone else.
Nope, same as mine. The delusional flag-wavers have just been the ones to shout the loudest, aided by the shit-stirring media (who aren't exactly known for their balanced and accurate reporting...), but for most tournaments I've watched, particularly since 2006 as has been said, most England supporters I've spoken to have gone into a tournament just hoping we put on a decent showing, and have no expectation of us winning the thing or getting much further than the Q/Fs.

There is a certain section who like to portray every England fan as the stereotypical lager lout who thinks football exists only in England, seemingly because they don't like England very much. But we'll take it. Because we can.

Does not leave too much time for wild speculation, betting tips and heated debate pre game?
That's what the general threads are for. You have general threads to chat on in between matches, match threads to discuss matches in the build-up, during the match and post-match.

General threads are the newspapers, match threads are the live coverage.

:hmm:

Shall we start the Brazil game thread now?

Yesterday I saw one England and one Portugal flag - I always want the later to especially fail in case I need to drive through Stockwell on a match night.

So will EVERY single game have a thread started?
Perhaps someone should start them all now to save time later?

friedaweed is yer man for this. Last time round he did the honours by helpfully previewing each match with a visual depiction encapsulating everything each country represents. They were complex, vivid works that cut to the core of the very idea of cultural identity. For example, a sausage vs a beret would signify Germany vs France.

I do hope he'll do the honours again this time round.
