94 was a pretty good world cup IMO. shit final, but a good tournament. 90 was pretty poor and the last one was a bit meh. this one's been pretty par to be honest. a few good performances, no classic games as such but ok.

90 and 94 were fucking awful.
94 started with a stinker, ended with a stinker and was markedly short of stonkers.

Don't you think any sense of disappointment may have been compounded by the ridiculous, overblown media hype over the WC?

Yeah, cos I've been in China, and not subject to it quite so much (although CCTV5 were doing a fair bit of hyping) I've been able to enjoy it for simply what it is. A tournament involving people kicking a ball around. And on that basis it's been quite enjoyable, no worse than Euro 2004 or world cup 2002 for sure, but not as good as euro 2000, which was a cracking tournament.

I should add that at least there have been some memorable goals in this one:

'that' Argentina 30,000 pass one
Roderiguez
Joe Cole
Gerrard v Trinidad
A german one in the first game, the scorer of whom i've temporarily forgotten
South korea free kick v Togo
France volley v Brazil

Last world cup I can only remember two goals of note - the Uruguay one versus Denmark (v.similar to cole's) and a brazil bicycle kick against costa rica

This Argie remembers it well -- World Cup 2002 was the one that left me crying for four years! Well no tears for me this time around. Argentina did themselves proud regardless of the outcome :: a grand thumpsup ::

... and. WC 2006 ain't over yet. With all the "foreigners" gone, the final four can now really play dirty :p

I've really enjoyed this WC. I reckon it's because I wasn't expecting France to actually do that well, so a dour 0-0 draw against Switzerland came as no surprise and was no more than I expected. Performances after the first round have been a bonus.

Also, i had a tenner on us to beat Brazil 1-0, Henry yo score. At least I thought I did.

Was at a mate's flat for the game, and one of the guys started supporting Brazil because he wanted the game to go to extra time. I mentioned that I needed the score to stay as it is as I had sent the missus (who was chatting to her mate on the sofa) to the bookies for me.

The other half hears me mention her name, I explain why.

She looks at me blankly, mumbles 'bookies?'.

I cried.

I haven't enjoyed this WC, generally speaking. Too many sides seem too good at competently locking a game down defensively, and not enough sides seem to possess players who can unlock that. Hence the apparent prevalence of tight games with pens to decide.

I also hate all the the diving and feigning etc. It's cheating, basically, and it's also a cheat to the spectator who wants to see player fight as hard as they can to win, not fall over like a cunt so he can try and win some set piece or other advantage.

Taking all this together you have to start wondering if the pampered millionaires on the pitch are actually 'hungry' enough to do what they should be doing.

Apart from England's games and the dour draw between Switzerland and Ukraine, I've thoroughly enjoyed this World Cup. The Germans have organised it brilliantly, and it was good that they encouraged everyone to turn up regardless of whether or not they had tickets. The fan fests were excellent during the group stage, watching three games a day on a big screen in the sunshine. Apart from when England were playing you hardly had to queue to get a beer.

From an organisation point of view, World cups are now far superior. But we should judge by the action on the field and for me, probably from Italia 90 onwards, world cups aren't what they used to be.

The comment that 1982 - a tournament that showcased Italy 3 Brazil 2 and France 3 Germany 3 - was much worse is obviously ludicrous. The final aside, 94 matches up better than this one too.

World cups should be judged by the football played in the knockout stages and this would contest with Italia 90 as the worst ever.

Fifa need a Stalin style purge on Diving. 6 months of post match given suspensions for diving and we should eb sorted. Its making the game not fun anymore.
