Is this a really shit time to change jobs?

Dunno about you, but I'm just about old enough to remember the great beancounter recession of 1991.

Tough times. Newly qualifieds, the best years of their lives given to the firm.. thrown out on the streets.

:(

I'm old enough but it was before I'd been lured into your world. They'll always be the first to go though won't they? Cannon fodder :(

I'm not actually a bean counter - I work on proposals for them to win more bean counting work :D

You're right. I am waiting for the offer letter - apparently they have agreed to most of my demands re salary and working hours so we will see what they come up with.

I do feel loyal though which I know is ridiculous. I'm really disappointed in my company tbh - I really believed that they meant what they said about valuing staff. You would think that doing what I do for a living, I'd know better :o

Have you got any post termination restraints in your contract of employment?

If so, you might want to reconsider what I've been harping on about (;)) re the mat leave return situation.

Get payment protection. Mine even covers pre-existing medical conditions.

Is is worth you having a chat with an employment lawyer? Only you may have a case for constructive dismissal...and a lawsuit would be a nice way to thank your current employers for being idiots.

Really? What do you mean? I know I could look myself but you'll save me loads of time and stupidity ;)

Oh and thank you :) I'm quite excited about working in uxbridge for some weird reason :D
Ms T is quite correct - mortgage protection insurance is sometimes not worth the paper it's written on.

Seriously, think very carefully and do your research before taking out such a policy. PPI in general has been under scrutiny by the FSA for some time now.

Some interesting stuff on PPI:

All too often you can end up with a very expensive policy that has so many exclusions it's unlikely you'd ever be able to claim on it.

If you're considering taking out such a policy it's imperative you shop around - independent insurers will often have better deals than the big banks.

Thank you, that's helpful :)

I'm unsure about the suing thing. Don't I have to stay working here and have exhausted all the internal procedures first? I'm not sure I have the energy to make a fuss. :( Besides which, I've already sued one firm and I don't want to get a reputation as being litigious!

Turns out this new job is on the same grade as the one I'm on now. But they are making a firm commitment to me to promote me by the end of the year. This lot are still being vague ...

God it's hard changing jobs isn't it?

Great news trashy :) Sounds like a much better deal than you're getting at the moment.

Enjoy the 3 months off with little un too :)

No, just a grievance. And you don't have to be working there to raise that.

Oh really? So I can hand in my notice and then get cross? That's very interesting as right now, I just can't deal with it. I am supremely pissed off with the way they've treated me, especially as they are always getting awards for being a great employer

You certainly can - and it's well worth doing it from what you've said about what's happened - but I'll leave advice to cesare - she the HR lady ;)

What you could do is resign because you feel that your treatment over this whole maternity issue has left you with no option - constructive dismissal. Then raise a more detailed grievance setting out why (that's the one hoop prior to raising the number of claims that you seem to have).

How come you're so knowledgeable? Are things not going well for you either? :(

That's very interesting.

What I did last time to get through it was just to take it one step at a time - just told myself I could pull out at any point. Seemed to be a bit less scary that way

Used to be a bit more up on my employment law in a previous life - and was sorely tempted to raise a grievance but never did.
Things at work are a bit shite atm, but that's due to 40% cuts to be made in the next few months.

Absolutely, you can take it one step at a time. I was just trying to give you a summary sorta thing.
