Is the rec being deliberately run down?

weren't there some vague plans mooted, sometime in the past two years, to knock down the rec and build a 'piazza' (town square), shops etc. and relocate the rec somewhere else? i vaguely recall something like that, or i might be dreaming... then again there is always some *plan* being proposed...

I had understood that that is exactly the plan - with the rec within it, or the rec's facilities re-created within it or elswhere nearby - possibly in connection with the new school. But there are lots of wider issues - provision of parking / possible re-location of Popes rd car park, upgrading the overground station and creating an interchange with the tube, 'rationalising' more of the councils's services / offices into it.

There is a story in the telegraph today (friday) about local councils etc writing to the sports minister to warn that soaring energy prices are making public pools incredibly expensive to heat. Sounds like they aer getting their excuses in early. No idea if Lambeth were signatories on the letter.
I can't find the link otherwise I would put it here.

I think I smell conspiracy theory where cock-up is more likely.

There's is something going badly wrong between Lambeth's estates department, the current leisure contractor (Leisure Connection) and whoever has the contract for mechanical and electical plant maintenance/repairs.

All three of the Borough's indoor pools (Brixton, Clapham and Streatham) have experienced major boiler failures/leaks within the last twelve months, despite some major spending on new plant in the last couple of years.

Oh for the days of an in-house maintenance team rather than three-way buck-passing in contractual disputes.

Surely Lambeth should sue the contractors then, or sack them??

they have just run out of 50 pence pieces to put in the meter ?
what about trying to put a big fuck off magnet next to the
wheel that spins around that should do it.......
hot water for everyone !!!

Easier said than done. Part of the problem is until late 2005, "the client side" in Lambeth Sport consisted of two men and a dog, who also ran all of the events programme in parks and open spaces. There was no proper monitoring, and therefore no contract enforcement/penalties were possible.

Leisure Connection's contract comes up for renewal in November - and I think LC may now have given up hope of renewal. I'm wondering if they are just working on a do-minimum basis.

See Leisure Connection Watch - protest website set up by a pissed off user of LC facilities in another borough - for further details.

Clapham Pool meeting tonight

Apparently Clapham Pool is for the chop as well. This is to be discussed at a Lambeth Revitalise meeting tonight, Tuesday 21st March at Clapham Manor Primary School, 7:00pm (creche available).

Lambeth are consulting on four options - do people want a new library and leisure centre on the site of Mary Seacole House or do they want facilities at the current sites refurbished.

Hardly "for the chop" - unless you follow the line of the Lambeth Labour Party's shameless scaremongering in the month before the local elections.

nothing like a bit of political bullshit to get things moving!

How can we be sure it's bullshit though?

I mean do we actually have any guarantees from Lambeth, that this is not the case?

fair enough. We don't have guarantees, but as LR said in post 42, they are at least consulting on the options. Which means it is up to us make sure that we all get in touch to say we want the rec to stay.
