Hollis, why don't you have a look at the BBC annual accounts, and look up some articles in newspaper and trade wesbites about the telly advertising market? It would help you no end...

Not here it's fucking not, there's still only four channels

It's not like we're in the fucking Hebrides or anything, on a good day you can hear the M4 from here.

If at the end of the day the telly adverstising market can't sustain costume drama's then so what.. I assume if they were such an earner then they'd all be producing them to flog to the yanks?

Well, the BBC does produce more than just costume dramas...as you'd find out with about 10 minutes research on the BBC website...

Many of the big CDs (the Sunday night, 8pm slots) are produced with the export market in mind, but the BBC also makes money from stuff like Life On Mars, The Office etc - which get better rating and more success now there seems to be a 'good' way of re-writing them for the US market.

This stuff about the BBC only spending money on CDs is a nonsense tho.

What markets are they flogged too?

All the costume/period stuff ends up on PBS for peanuts. A channel that has to hold telethons to keep it going can't splash too much cash out.

And I can't see many viewers in Japan being that interested in Little Dorrit?

Go find out. BBC worldwide is the bit that flogs the shows overseas.

And Japan loves UK costume drama.

Also...top 5 selling shows...Top Gear, Robin Hood, Dr Who, Primeval (on behalf of it's production company) and Spooks.

I don't pay the fee simply because I don't watch enough television to justify the expense. I would be happy with paying micropayments for the few shows I watch on Iplayer though.

The BBC license is much better value than a Sky subscription. I don't believe people when they say the never watch/listen to the bbc.
