Is the Grand National worth a punt?

Or is it just for amateurs and a complete waste of time?

I always have a flutter. I never win though. :( My horses sometimes get placed 3rd or 4th, but a lot of the type they just trip over the fences :o

its one of the easiest races to get right. Half the field can be discarded because they are shit and a quarter because of the ground. so then you have about 10. i usually go for one of the favourites (around 6-1) to win and an outsider (33-1) each way

my mum always picks the winner the jammy cow! and she always seems to win at least a tonne

when is it btw? i gunner have a go this year.

dunno. i was trying to sound knowledgeable :(

she always seems to get a hundred or so

I know - tonne is a metric tonne innit, ther's different sorts of ton (long, short etc) I was trying to be funny

anyway

these horses.....:p

i always refused to bet - too many fucking horses die - but we were away last year at a party on the IoW and there was a sweepstake i joined in with to be sociable.
my concern for the horses dissipated as i took the lead and won :)

what's a monkey? maybe i shoulda just said that...
monkey = five hundred pounds (£500). Probably London slang from the early 1800's. Origin unknown. Like the 'pony' meaning £25, it is suggested by some that the association derives from Indian rupee banknotes featuring the animal.

i always have a punt on the national, won about £40 last year:cool:

usually have a fiver on one of the lowest priced ones, and a quid each way on a 50/1 shot, that might get a place

offensive pic :(

These people keep records instead.

Kind of makes you feel guilty about backing the industry. Had a couple of winners (picked first runner with odds of 50/1) lost more often though.

I love horse racing. Like, love it with all my fibre. If I come into 20,000K the first thing I'll do is buy a horse.

Horses being killed is regrettable and very hard for me to square it with myself. But the emotive bullshit you get on a site like veggies.org does no good for anybody. "Every year x horses are raced to death" What does this mean?

The horse in the picture has no jockey on his back. Is he being raced to death?

Always have a flutter on this and like others, usually takes the form of backing one on the nose and one or two long-odds each-way as there's nearly always a long-priced nag in the first 4. Also enter the pub sweepstake and sometimes a work one as well. Total outlay ~£5 usually. Total winnings - anything from nowt to ~£60 one year. My g/f seems to have the golden touch tho, she's backed a winner regular somehow.

Seeing as the horse in the picture is saddled and wearing reins i would say he was certainly being rode. I assume an break like that would ensure the end of its racing usefulness, and so perhaps his life?

so its not imposable that he was rode to death.

Maybe, but it's not clear to me. Do you know what I mean about veggie.org though? "Rode to Death" is so emotive. It contributes nothing.

Ok Urban Punters
I will let you in on a hot tip

(straight from the horse's mouth)

The horse is called Simon

I think you can still get 20 to 1 on it

Worth a five pound wager:

The animal rights thing is regrettable and I dont have an answer to it any discomfort is confounded by the fact that the gigis is the sport of toffs, kings and yuppies to boot:

gwan simon you budddddgggiiiieeeeee!!!!!
