Is Sol Campbell Finished?

campbell has suffered for all sorts of reasons. a constantly changing back four. fitness problems. his ankle injury must have been very serious - he's slow and can't jump. mentally, he's got to face the fact he may not start in the world cup, that he's likely not to. difficult for a man like sol. problems away from the game, as it sounds like with what pires has said, would just add to the mix.

terry and king centre backs. end of

ericsson

I reckon the younger Ferdinand brother is in with a shout of making the squad.

well let's hope he isn't as sssllooowww as his thicker than shit brother. he looked good for the hammers against arsenal. very green still though and there isn't any real point in taking him. you can take inexperience when it's a winger and they are supposed to take people on, but not when they are defenders and supposed to stop people.

Probably not quite ready for the step up just yet but Michael Dawson has been doing well for Spurs this season, I wouldn't be surprised if he is in the new England managers plans for the European qualifying campaign.

Campbell has played many a good game for England, and is possibly one of the unluckiest when you consider the two 'goals' that were disallowed in France and in Portugal. The problem is that he's clearly lacking in confidence at the moment playing in a poorly performing Arsenal team. The thing is, I don't exactly think that Rio is as good as I thought he used to be, but I'd still have him at the back alongside Terry. Carragher is the obvious back-up, and wouldn't particularly mind if he starts the odd game.

If Rio would only stop prancing around like a tit thinking he's the best defender in the world (which he probably is on his very rare day) he'd do a lot better. Shame about Sol I thought he looked okay when he broke back into the Gunners team, but he's looking like a shell of the player he was at France '98 (fuck me I remember when he was an attacking midfielder for Spurs).

Another vote for King and Terry, unless Rio can sort it aht.

I know he earns 90 grand a week and royally shafted Spurs, but if Sol is gay or bi I feel very sorry for him. The homophobic shit he'll have to put up with from rival fans for the rest of his career is just too horrible to contemplate. I saw Justin Fashnu play once – he was barracked and abused for the entire match. That must really hurt and drive you crazy eventually.

not just fans, remember Robbie Fowler's 'bum' gestures towards Graeme Le Saux a few years ago. Deeply unpleasant. :(

..and wasn't that just because he read the Guardian? :D Sorry shouldn't laugh but the stupidity is so absurd.

Absolutely – Le Saux being termed "gay" because he read the Guardian and had an interest in architecture. It'd be funny if it wasn't so depressing.

tbh, times have changed a bit since then, if he came out and was honest about it I don't know if he would come up against that much flak - no more than normal anyway...

Wenger hasn't seen or heard from Campbell since Wednesday, but says he 'does not fear for his life' - 5live :eek::eek:

as much as I hate to see violence on the pitch I applauded Le Saux's elbow in Fowler's face. even better, the ref completely missed it. :)

I detest the man's professional values and they way he lied for profit, but I respect his privacy.

His imprisoned brother is difficult; it was a Spurs fan who provoked him by referring to Campbell's sexuality, obviously because of what Campbell did to Tottenham (the lies, implicitly encouraging kids to keep buying shirts with his name on, etc) - it covers both his professional values and his private life.

But whether right or wrong, his brother is in prison as a consequence of the way he left Spurs.

Heard the HIV rumour and Sol?
FFS. Is his really the kind of spiteful gossip you want to be peddling over the internet?

I couldn't give a fuck if he's a raging hetero, gay, bi, has six knobs or prefers sex with trees.

He's a footballer. Judge him on that.

Fwiw, I am now hearing this story isn't about his sexual orientation, though everyone assumes that becasue of the stories over the years.

But rumours are rife and getting wilder, just thought I'd mention people might be barking up the wrong tree.

More gossip, but perhaps better in the sense it doesn't involve health.

Another rumour running around Fleet St has people pretty stunned; High Court injunction sought this afternoon to prevent story on Sunday concerning Campbell and his relationship with another player capped by England, and current regular Prem player.

We'll know soon enough, I suppose.

Err, hello? Can people stop and think about what they're doing here?

This thread has been a long trail of unverified, speculative and generally unpleasant rumours, some of which might well catch the attention of a passing lawyer.

I would ask posters to remove all of their fact-free "I heard from a mate..." tittle tattle, and only post up something that has at least some actual basis in fact.

Failure to do so means the whole thread will be deleted.

What exactly are the rules? Can I say what I think is going to be in the papers on Sunday? (IE what I've heard). Might as well just keep schtum because if it's true they'll probably get an injunction. Plus it's Friday already, only a couple of days til the shit (possibly) hits the fan.

Hope he's alright and the papers are respectful whatevers going on- although thats never ever going to happen.
