Is my house going to burn down? (dodgy electrical problem)

if it's from the main board to the fuse box then it's your responsiblity if it's from the main supply to the main board (where the meter is) then it's you local electricity distributor and they would have to do this as an emergancy job which means up to 2 weeks (electricity not being considered as high a priority compared to gas).

it wouldn't necessarily be an emergency job if a) the customers are still on supply and b) there is no immediate safety risk. i think such work is more likely to come under planned work, which, if there are relatively few customers involved, could take a long time to get sorted

This was some years ago. Several plumbers are advertising new boilers fitted from £995 in the local press now.

What kind of boiler (make)? I am in the process of getting mine replaced (well, getting quotes anyway) but I want a Worcester or Vaillant.

if it's on an intermittant supply then they would be able to get someone out it's all about getting through to their priority services teams they all have them but will make every effort not too...

me thinks if you get no joy it'll be time to make your local mp do some work for their £65,000 a year...

sorry, just re-read thread and noticed the bit about flickering, so there's a case for getting the work done sooner as it would come under the Electricity (Continuity and Quality of Supply) Regulations

Complaining to the MP wouldn't be the best approach imo. It would be better to go to Consumer Direct who have taken over from energywatch who were the industry watchdog.

DNOs ime (having worked for one as a contractor) respond much better to complaints to the regulator as these have to be specifically reported under Guaranteed Standards; other complaints get reported too, but ime they're not treated as high a priority as complaints to the regulator (i.e. Consumer Direct). Having said that, if the DNO haven't been given a chance to rectify the problem, there's not really grounds for complaint....yet.

And having said that, if the dodgy cables aren't the DNO's, then it's something VP would have to sort out.

e2a: priority needs teams might not get involved if there are no 'Special Needs' customers affected, i.e., those who need a constant supply for e.g. medical equipment such as dialysis machines
