Is Lost worth sticking with? No spoilers please

A possible theory...

I've only seen the ones shown on Ch 4, and the last episode gave me an idea about the eventual denouement... Somebody mentioned that "none of us should have survived that plane crash". Could it be that they are all really dead? This is a device that has been used before in fiction, (eg: The Others, and a prog I saw once about ppl in the Blitz). Is that why Locke, say, has found that he can walk again? Their previous lives are flashing before them - well, before us, really- and they are coming to terms with stuff like giving up substances, succeeding in hunting, etc. The only argument against this tho is that one character actually did die (the copper). I was wondering if the dreadful monster in the jungle is really something to do with them confronting their worst fears - like a sort of Room 101 on legs.

Hope my theory hasn't buggered up anyone's enjoyment. It may not be true...

DEFINITELY DEFINITELY DEFINITELY NOT any kind of purgatory type situation.

thats from the writer who had to quash those rumours after they got out of control when it was aired in the US.

My theory (based on the fact that I have two episodes to watch) is that the island has been used in scientific experiments around Quantum Physics :)
To reveal why I think this would involve spoilers though it remains speculation at this point ;)

Is it 'cos their perceptions seem to be shaping reality?

How interesting - I am just reading Introducing Quantum Physics by JP McEvoy and Oscar Zarate now.

Well I've watched the entire of season I in 8 days and I'm completely hooked - can't believe I'm going to have to wait a few days for season II

Well...

it's funny you should say that. Having only just watched one episode (ever) while painting a room (last night 18/9), it seemed just that:

1) One character says we survived a crash we shouldn#t, no way.,

2) another refers to Jack in the past tense "if he had lived?" when he is alive, and there was another past tense reference to a living character like that.

3) the constant flash-backs.

4) the fact they seem, well, 'lost', ie no communication. Did none of these geeks have mobiles (a la Ben Lewis ;) ;) )? Hardly believable in this day & age..

5) In all, the feel reminded me in some ways of one of my favourite films, 'Jacobs Ladder'.

So, on the above snap-shot alone, the show seems to be simulating Purgatory to an extent. For what it's worth, seemed intriguing enough for me to want to watch again--though not as compulsively as Enterprise...

How are you meant to get a signal on a remote island with no transmitter?

don't forget--I've only watched this episode (as stated), so expecting me to answer detailed plot questions is not on. But where is this Island? And if it is (presumably) near major aircraft routes, why not try and contact planes etc. Or, if there is no precise geographical location given, maybe the Purgatory scenario is valid.

After watching last night's Channel 4 Lost, I must admit after being gripped initally by the first few episodes, the slow pace of the show is starting to bore me. All the Builten Boards I am on seemed to have stopped talking about it too. Also since I found out that the orgianal story was written and scripted for 13 episodes before the network wanted 26 episodes has put me off even more.

Is it worth sticking with? Are others bored with it yet?

I've seen all the episodes so far (I watch it on E4's Second Chance Sunday) and know exactly what you mean – it is painfully slow to give up its secrets. That said, despite trying to avoid spoilers, I did read a preview of the second season in Entertainment Weekly over the weekend and some of the stuff that's on the way in season one has definitely persuaded me to stick with the show.

I'm up to episode 13 and it's got much better ! After episode 4 or 5 I wasn't sure I was going to carry on watching but I decided to dowload the rest of the episodes and give it a go and it was well worth it IMO !

What I know about coordinates etc isn't worth spit, but basically, they're on some remote speck of an island in the south pacific - way off all the air routes. They were on course, but then had difficulties and needed to turn back, but went hundreds (thousands?) of miles off course trying to find somewhere to land.

Didn't their beacon thing break off about a thousand miles from where they are? So all the resuce people are looking in the wrong place. I am sure this was talked about in the first episode, but with my goldfish type memory.....

I think you may be right.

See I'm not scientifically minded - I hear things like that, I buy the "won't be found" idea - I ask no more questions. :)

I dunno about all these clever theories an' that. I've tried to suss out what's happening and be ultra clever like trying to work out if there's significance in the book that Sawyer's reading (Watership Down) or whatever but I'm not too bright with stuff like that, so I'm just enjoying it for it being another quality bit of US telly.

Last night's (on E4's second chance sunday, and to be shown on C4 this weds) was pretty gruesome though!

it feels a little bit ridiculous though - good looking people with the obligatory fat guy all on a beach without an ounce of sense - throw in a little jurassic park feel and a polar bear or two for surreality...
and all that business about running out of water - are they not near the sea with a burning plane nearby? they've got water and fire, distill it.

however, I am sure I'll persevere, but I dont find it exciting in the least now.

I don't want to be spoiling anything for anyone, but if I said the one with missing asthma inhalers, and Sayid's experience in the Imperial Guard...ya get me? ;)

I'm not sure it's meant to be rational, though.

Is there anything in the idea that people get what they wish for on the island? Locke wanted to walk again. He does. The Doctor wants to his poor, dead Dad, Dad appears. The little kid was reading about polar bears in his comic, hey presto, next thing a polar bear pops up...err...I'm sure I thought of some other examples...last night, before that final spleef...damn this short-term measure loss...err...

D'oh! I'm not a geek or anything, honest, but i've just had a vision of Lost Vs Star Wars in a Adam and Joe soft toy stylie remake, which totally made me smile...

But isn't the hole in that theory is that the first wish for most of them would be to get off the island?

Ahhh, but would they?

;)

How many of them really, truly want to get off the Island? Maybe that's why they're 'there'.

This remains my theory. We haven't heard all the stories yet, but I reckon that, when we do, we will find out that even those who claim that they want to get off the island don't really.

Or, maybe, those who DO really want to get off the island, are the ones who die?
