Is it unrealistic to try and find a job that pays at least £21,000/year

God, threads like this depress me. If I wasn't such a fucking idiot with money in my early twenties, I wouldn't be so fucked now. You can afford plenty of stuff on £21k and I'm struggling on £40k... what a dick :(

I earn a good wage now, but I'm still spunking it all :o

I'd say it wouldn't be too hard to find a job with that wage if you have the proper qualifications etc but it would be nigh on impossible if you want to do a Masters at the same time.

If you lived in London and had a reasonable knowledge of MS Office and could get a CRB clearance without any hassle you'd have no probs making that in London, but as you're in Manchester, I haven't the foggiest.

Where the hell would I find these jobs then ?

I've been looking for years and it seems like they are a no-go unless you are a graduate.

You're with Lifeline aren't you? Give them some serious hassle about getting your hourly rate up for admin jobs - presumably you've done all the package tests (word, excel etc) and are OK with your typing speed? I know of more than a few idiot admin staff who are non-grads in the NHS on more than £21K from Matchbank...altho I need to move away from that subject because I just get pissed off and in trouble with HR...

social housing pays a reasonable wage, you don't have to be a graduate (although i am) i've known plenty of people (non graduates) on £25k plus working for housing associations

I earnt more in my mid-20s than I do in my mid-30s!

As for the OP's original question - you can earn alot of money from corporate sales. If you opt for recruitment, the averge basic is £20K for a trainee and on top you get commission. Pick a market like the public sector/not-for-profit organisations cos that's still on the up. Stay away from property markets unless it's in social housing. Just go in there with a open mind and remind yourself that it's a means to an end.

social housing does have a lot of temp recruitment, at the moment there seems to be a squeeze on permanent jobs though, when i look on the websites which advertise permanent work - insidehousing and the guardian jobs page, there is not a lot about, and the emails from housing recruitment agencies that I receive seem a bit lacking in vacancies at the moment, it seemed a lot healther sector job wise when I was looking 6 months ago

Thanks for all the replies. I think If I am going to do something like recruitment or sales I am just going to have to grit my teeth and get on with it. I might have to revise down my travel ambitions and pool resources with my partner to try and make ends meet.

Noooo. You can't grit your teeth and get down to it in sales - you've got to be on on on all day and get those commisions! Sell! Call! Call! Call! Rejection! Rejection! Rejection!

No being funny but you've been all over urban asking about all sorts of stuff - you on a high?

I dont fancy the army. I have just been looking on fish4jobs and all the jobs for 21k are sales/recruitment jobs which I would consider right now but you need a 'proven track record' in 'sales'/'recruitment'. I will keep looking though.

Just lie about it. WTF do you think sales is?

Couple of thoughts that might not have come up.

You could save for the masters over two years £1,500 a year is easier to save than 3 grand. Or have you looked into a career devleopment loan- you could save half and borrow half.

If you wanted to move to London and temp for a year, there are ways to live fairly cheaply. You wouldn't need that car for a start, and if you can stomach a shared house your rent wouldn't be that much. Bike (with the bus if the weather turns foul) is much cheaper than the tube.
