Is it unrealistic to try and find a job that pays at least £21,000/year

Oh thats interesting. One of the things I've thought of doing is Library studies. As I put on my mini CV I've worked in libraries. Jobs are quite hard to come by in public libraries. I think library work would be so much better than working in sales or recruitment. I did apply for a job at a local uni in their careers library. I came third, i got beaten by someone with a library studies degree so I guess it does come in useful

Well, I am doing proper graduate training (hopefully) so I would be a chartered Librarian, in Academic libraries. You have to do the work experience and a masters afterwards.

dunno like, I've heard they make you do regular antitorture training in case you're captured by REED;)
(Not a specific response, but to continue the recruitment theme)

Don't know what to do for a career? No idea what is out there? Don't know how to even begin searching? It's simple! Just get a job in recruitment and advise OTHER people what to do instead!

Recruitment is a lot of outbound sales and one really has to be the right sort for that. People are born to be in sales, imo. You fail hard if you just reckon it's a piece of piss then end up being rubbish at it. I'd leave it alone if I were you. If you haven't done it yet then I doubt it's for you. No judgement. I can't do it either :D

Have you tried signing up to an agency? As soon as you do and see the recrutimentards in action you will see what it's like :D

i was rubbish at sales tbf, sold advertising space about 20 years ago for a national newspaper, my first job in london - i really couldn't be arsed with all the selling stuff nonsense:D used to ring people and if they weren't interested, I'd say "fair enough":D lasted 6 months:D

Misread that as 'I did sales for 20 years' :D Marty? Did sales? With his reputation? :hmm:

If you lived in London and had a reasonable knowledge of MS Office and could get a CRB clearance without any hassle you'd have no probs making that in London, but as you're in Manchester, I haven't the foggiest.

Yes I grant its not as bad as working in a prisoner of war camp or in slavery but I just get the impression that its all very targets driven and that you have to be pretty hard faced to work in recruitment. Im not hard faced at all, Im very soft.
Then avoid anything commission based - which is a shame as that's one area where you can make big money without any real skills (as long as you're obnoxious & lacking in scruples).

I think you're in for a bit of a struggle to be honest. "nice" jobs which don't require specialised skills almost invariably pay poorly. Roles requiring specialised skills, and usually demonstrable experience too, pay better for obvious reasons.

Have you considered doing two jobs? Something nice & non-evil by day, then maybe bar work or similar a few nights a week / weekend ?

Anthropology was the ultimate career goal, but I didn't want to assume that it was also the degree.

I'm not sure what an athropology degree involves. Is it numerate?

not really - not sure of the exact definition - i studied social anthropology about 25 years ago, it was a social behaviour type thing iirc

I suippose there's some statistical analysis in it but not all hardcore numbers like what kabbes is into :D

You get better access to weapons and cool camo gear in the army. And 4 weeks a year rock climbing, kayaking etc on top of your leave. (Which by the way is spent shagging yourself raw 'cos all the girls like a soldier - note how it's only the gay men who lose out there).

I've talked myself into re-enlisting....!

llanrwst isnt what it used to be.. and then there is the ban on squadies at the swallow falls mid week now...

in london you can pull that in by temping if you're any good and lucky. but manchester? who can say!

Some statistical analysis is all you need to talk your way into a numbers job. That'd pay you more than £21k.

May not be the best timing for it though...

God, threads like this depress me. If I wasn't such a fucking idiot with money in my early twenties, I wouldn't be so fucked now. You can afford plenty of stuff on £21k and I'm struggling on £40k... what a dick :(

As long as you're good with negative numbers. (For a government job, being good with imaginary numbers would help too.)

I think it is better to be good with abstract concepts. Such as "secured loans that aren't actually secured on anything".

you talk like your early twenties was a long time ago, you are still in your twenties aren't you

in my early 20s I earned about £11k a year :(

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for my salary. I know it's really good, I just wish I could enjoy it instead of having to scrimp and save for the next few years. Still, cake/eat it and all that. And at least I'm fortunate enough to be in a position where I can pay back the stupid debts we've amassed.
