Is it time to scrap gender specific awards?

What we really need is a world where everyone is always treated equally & gender is irrelevant, but that's not going to happen this side of the zombie apocalypse.

It's certainly not going to happen while we have separate awards for different genders.

We are probably not ready yet, when things like this are still going on:
Tory MP makes 'discrimination' complaint over Jhalak Prize | The Bookseller
Meanwhile there have been a few instances recently of people choosing not to accept awards that were restricted by gender or ethnicity and explaing why, which is also good.
Oh so you're willing to engage with the thread now rather than just make attacks on me because I started it.

Let me just make a dismissive sentence about your post without considering it fully...

Oh sod off. I objected to you saying 'we' as if you had been helping .

Why would you object to a mostly meaningless award? If I were participating with a chance to win a meaningless award, I would prefer if there were more options for me to win rather than fewer.
Not necessarily the nominees, but others. Some feel that the separation isn't desirable as it implies that women can't compete. An idea which might make sense in certain sports (though that becomes problematic with trans athletes), but less so acting.

OK, how would you propose we deal with the latent bias that exists within society to favour the male gender? Even in instances where there is no actual male bias, if more men win than women, the perception will persist. It would glib to say "the best person will win", because we all know that whilst some of us may strive for gender equality, many others do not.

Gender neutral awards categories solve one problem whilst creating another. What is your solution for addressing both?

The answer is just to scrap acting awards generally. Bunch of self-congratulatory toss. Nobody is giving me an award for my job*, despite me being awesome at it.

*if you ignore the pay, that is.
set an industry award up then. Get AutoglassUK to sponsor it, book a Kettering conference centre, buy some shit trophies- go full patridge on it

They do have industry awards, actually. And in a piece of refreshing honesty, they make no bones about the fact that you buy your way to victory in it. About £10,000 normally, but there are a lot of different ceremonies with different prices.

Full communism.

No idea. Just not sure they even solve one problem though, rather than covering it up.

Gender awards are one of the tools of equality. They seek to redress an imbalance.

If they create one problem whilst creating another then you need to ask yourself which problem is worse?
Does the value of that tool outweigh the cost?

A similar question could be posed for all women shortlists for MP elections.

If there was a magic solution that addressed both then surely we'd already be using it.

I don't think it's something that will become common.

It's not as if acting can actually be judged to say someone gave the best performance anyway.

Film and other entertainment awards are mainly for publicity so why would the industry want to reduce the number of films/actors they give publicity too?

hey you're not Leonard Maltin are you ?

It's quite interesting actually. I've just been reading one of their articles about how insurance actuaries are surprisingly different to pensions actuaries, especially when attempting to answer questions such as "how do you determine the discount rate for very long tailed liabilities".
