Is it normal for cats to catch bats?

Louloubelle said:
your cat would never kill a bat then, the bat just 'tripped and fell into its paws'
 :(

Well I've tried grilling him about it but he aint telling, will have to wait for results of the post mortem I am afraid.

Why ask for advice and then spit the dummy when you get it?

Sorry?
Don't remember asking for advice?
I asked whether people thought it was normal for cats to catch bats as I have owned cats all my life and none have ever caught one before (to my knowledge)

I didn't ask for people making snidey comments about how worthy a cat owner I am. :(

"subnormal" comment was a joke BTW should have added a ;)

Ok - none of my cats have ever caught a bat. Maybe because they have bells on their collars.

Big Ron earlier

There's no need to get all snitty because someone suggested belling the cat. Of our three, the eldest two are completely unbothered by having a collar and bell on. The youngest tomcat hated it for about a day then he forgot it was there (he has the brain of a goldfish). It doesn't completely stop them catching things, it just makes it harder for them so reduces the numbers of little rodent/birdie/bat corpses lying around the house.

T'was the manner that the suggestion was made not the suggestion itself.
I don't take kindly to snidey comments made by people who seem unable to make a point without being unneccessarily insulting about it.
None of the cats I have ever owned have tolerated having a bell on their collar, one nearly got run over because it was scared of the noise and was trying to run away from it , which obviously just made it worse. :(

yeah, like sorry about big ron (LOL) he just fell into my mouth

*belches*

Hope that dogs wearing a bell, could be a danger to wildlife ;)
Big Ron is probably bigger than that doggy TBH, maybe when he was this size

FFS, I can't believe how shitty this thread has become, can't you lot play nicely? :p

It is a fair point about them wearing bells and we have tried before but I guess we do need to persevere but it did really freak them out. We do not enjoy it when our cats kill wildlife.

There is no fucking need though for loulou and purves to call nathansears a thicko and a div and tell him (and therefore me) that he doesn't deserve to own a cat.

We have tried to keep them in at night, not just because they kill at night but because there is a nasty tomcat who has injured my boys regularly over the last 2 years. The result is that Ron stops coming in at all as he knows we are going to lock him in. I then spent hours trawling the neighbouring streets looking for him to make sure he is not hurt and also because I miss him desperately. We found Harry trying to squeeze out of a tiny first floor window he was so desperate to be outside, is that not cruel?

We adore our cats and I can understand why nathansears has become so defensive in this thread. Fine give your opinion, why else start the thread but why not constructive opinions and advice not hysterical abuse and judgements on our worthyness as pet owners.

Good post. True. :)

My cat Bailey dosnt have a collar , he has previously caught mice and a few birds.

Dont under the how this thread got so uncessary , its cat behaviour.

and it's dog behaviour (for some dogs anyway) to chase and tear apart cats. Doesn't make it OK though does it?

When I was a kid our next door neighbour owned 2 red setters that had killed another neighbours pet cat that had wandered into their garden. Their response? "our boys were only doing what comes naturally, if you don't want your cat to get hurt, make sure it stays away from our garden"

I love cats. I appreciate that they instinctively chase and kill smaller animals and birds.

That is exactly why cat owners should be responsible and limit the damage done by their pets. If people can't be bothered to take the necessary steps to do this they're being just as arrogant as my old neighbor with her red setters. IMO

I also think that people who own dogs should keep them muzzzled in public if they are have a propensity to bite and should pick up their dogs shit and dispose of it properly.

People should get their pets neutered too.

er that's it  ;)

Did you not read my fucking post? We can be bothered, locking them in doesn't work and I have said we should try the bell again.

If you can't discuss the issue without getting personal please just fuck off, your arrogance on this thread has been unbelieveable.

I'm sure you can find a way to keep your cats indoors, when I had cats years ago they didn't like being kept in either, the easy way to do it is to feed them and make sure they can't get out after their evening feed. It ain't rocket science. If they try to squeeze through windows, dur, close the windows in the room they're in.

You may think it's cruel to make your cats stay in when they want to get out but it's not as cruel as letting them run around killing wildlife

I'm pleased that you're going to try again with the bells

You seem to have taken my last post very personally, I did read your post, did you read mine?

I would never get any sleep if I kept Bailey in at night.

You cant compare a dog eating a cat , to a cat eating a bat.

Thats just bonkers IMO.

If we start locking them in, they don't come back at all. We locked them in at night for a few weeks last time one of them was attacked by the tom cat and we spent hours searching for them at night. There are too many old farts on this street who think it's ok to feed other peoples cats and let them in, they will just go somewhere else where they can come and go as they please.

I did take your post personally because it is almost the same as the one directed at nathansears earlier. If it wasn't specifically aimed at us I apologise but it seemed like that to me.

Get a sonic collar, as is oft suggested when this topic comes up.

I don't think Louloubelle has been arrogant at all. The benighted ignorance of this nathansears is unbelievable.

there are many differences between cats and bats (obviously)

One important difference is that bats are a native animal that are becoming scarce, even the pipistrelle, our most common bat is in steep decline

Cats on the other hand, lovely though they are, are an introduced, non native species and are extremely common, growing in numbers all the time

They are both mammals, they both feel pain and possess some degree of intelligence, they should all be protected from cruelty and pain

FFS, you're all as bad as eachother. Is a thread about a fucking cat really worth all this shit.

I want you both to sit in the naughty corner. :p

It's a trade off with cats for me. I live on a boat and we did have a problem with rats when we first moved onto our new mooring. Now there's a few more boats here with cats you never see rats, ever. Unfortunately the mooring is a site of special scientific interest because of some particulaly rare type of water vole that lives here. Two of the cats have overcome their apparent fear of water and will lie in wait in the grass next to the canal (we've got soft banks here, not brick sides) and leap into the water to catch them. I doubt there will be much of interest vole wise in a few years :(
