Nah it's not cheating. I find it's harder to do a remix than an original composition as you have to work out what the key and notes are of the track being remixed otherwise you’ve created a track out of key that sounds like poo and a melody that doesn’t ‘fit’
I often do a remix of a track to a different genre. i.e. that remix I did of ‘Still DRE’ . I loved the orig track and the main riff and thought how awesome it would sound as a DnB track.
