Bob Marley day in Ja'??? his own peeps (mostly)(Jamaicans) see him as a God?

Beyond commercial success???? C'mon...

Maybe I need to read the thread.

I think the fact he's an icon in Jamaica does show that there's more to him than just being some cod-reggae act designed to appeal to white people, surely?

Soz... I know this is an old thread but I was searching for Marley and seen this thread + this post.

As for this post, and before I read anymore of the thread I have to say it's probably the most ridiculous thing anyone had ever said, ever.

Bob Marley not even in the top 30 Reggae artists ever?

l.o.proper.l.

I think Jefe was getting a bit carried away. I know what he's thinking though.

i never suggested he is. i don't think anyone on this thread has suggested anything of the sort.

regardless, his status in jamaica doesn't make me like him more than i do. should it?

Yes. Maybe because his impact as a person spilled over from music into politics. If Bob Marley was alive today he would probably be a city Mayor at the very least.

oh well. you're perfectly entitled to have him in your own top 30 y'know. :)

Well if you want to define your top 30 and I'm free to define my own top 30 then the OP TITLE OF THREAD is meaningless. Maybe you are just outvoted on this one. Popularity in Jamaica counts a lot!!

have you seen the results of the poll? 53 to 14 against... i don't think any serious reggae fan would ever claim marley is the greatest reggae artist ever... popularity with the general populace counts for shit, i'm afraid.

Lets not fall out over definitions of the word "greatest". :D

I'm utterly shocked that people hold this position killer b. I love reggae, absolutely love it, my missus gets pissed off sometimes I play so much.

I know everyone has their own taste etc.. and in truth, I rarely reach for any Marley album first, but to say he's not even in the top 30 is something I am unable to fathom in my thick brain.

Some of his music is just incredible and the meaning behind some of the lyrics are so simple yet brilliant.

If he aint number 1, he aint far off it in my mind.

indeed. saying things like 'amy winehouse can't sing' is the kind of garbage thats fashionable these days. or 'Bob Marley wasnt that great.'

who cares that he managed to breakthrough to the mainstream?? some music that becomes hugely popular mainstream is actually good, you know???

yea, amy winehouse can sing, but her singing voice is completely affected. like ian astbury of the cult or billy idol when they affected singing in an american accent. don't think anyone on the planet could possibly dispute that.

great singers sing in their own voice. not like someone singing nina simone in a karaoke bar.

i'm no great expert on reggae but i'd have thought Lee Perry would be regarded as 'the greatest reggae artist' , tho i'm sure there are many on here to make a more qualified verdict.

Who were that band that headlined at the 2008 Lambeth Country Show?

Nobody really. They booked the late great Alton Ellis for what could have been one of his last performances but then wouldn't pay him an advance to reach from JA.

Then they booked Aswad but they were in France & didn't make it.

Combined with King Tubbys System playing some pretty atrocious selections between bands while their MC's did a bit of shouty business it was the worst Country Show for years reggae-wise.

Mainly 'cos they sacked off Culture promotions' Nicky E and decided to "organise" it themselves. Doubt they've learned their lesson for this year.

From 'Stuff White People Like'

During the course of a white person’s education they will go through many phases including but not limited to: “awkward,” “classic rock,” and “being really into a foreign country.” Of these phases, there is only one that all white people are required to go through before they can obtain their bachelor’s degree. It is known as “Bob Marley.”

Depending on the coolness of the white person, they can experience this stage anywhere between the sixth grade and their last year of college. Regardless of when they went through this phase, every white person can tell you about the time when they had Legend on repeat. If you wish to test this theory, go to any floor in a College Dorm and there is a 100% chance you will find at least one Bob Marley poster.

It is also worth noting that white people tend get into smoking marijuana during this phase. This is why all white people view the combination of the two as one of the most pleasurable experiences on earth. But when white people really want to take it to the next level they will combine Bob Marley, Marijuana, a long weekend and some sort of notable outdoor location (beach, cottage, or patio). There are few activities on earth that are more appealing to white people.

The only acceptable reasons for declining participation are a prior engagement at a music festival or a commitment to go camping.

It’s also worth noting that when talking to white people about Bob Marley there is no need to use his surname. This is because all white people refer to him simply as “Bob.”

Since so many people are into Bob Marley, it is only natural for advanced white people to profess to only marginally liking Bob Marley (note: it is impossible for a white person to outright dislike him). Instead, these white people will claim to preferring more obscure artists like Burning Spear or Peter Tosh.

But be warned that a white person saying they like “reggae” what they really mean is “reggae from 1965-1983.”

Under no circumstances should you ever bring a white person to a dancehall reggae concert, it will frighten them.

Note: if you are talking to a white person who is really into Bob Marley, has dreadlocks, and professes to be a Rastafarian, you should end the conversation immediately. These people are of no value unless you need directions to a WTO protest or have questions about how bad a human can smell.

i think most people who think bob marley is the greatest reggae artist of all time, generally know very little about reggae. im not saying this is always the case and everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

its a bit like saying the sex pistols are the best punk band of all time.
