Is anyone else an inglory hunter?

Why do you support Stenny?

Years ago a mate of mine used to work in a sports shop, at the time when the kits used to come in a box with cellophane on the top, with shirts socks and shorts all in. Every day the kids would call in on their way home from school and ogle the latest Liverpool, or probably in those days,Derby kits.

One day they asked him which team he supported and he said, Stenhousemuir reserves, being the most obtuse answer he could come up with on the spur of the moment.

Of course he starts looking out for their results and he was hooked. One Good Friday he finished work at lunchtime and couldnt think of anything better to do, so decided to drive up and see Stenny playing, not even knowing if they were at home. He set off in his mini, and stopping at some traffic lights got talking to a female friend who decided to hop in for the trip. This scuppered his idea of sleeping in the car, and by the time he had forked out for a room and petrol he didnt have any money left for a ticket to the game!!

He went into the Stennhy supporters club bar on the friday and they ahd a whip round for him, bought him his beers and paid for his ticket. He was introduced on the pitch at half time and the magic strted. He went back every year and the more people who heard the story the more people thought, I'll have some of that. At one point there was over a dozen of us. We used to go to the end of season players dinner dance and even had a shrine in our local with autographed shirt programmes etc.

Refused, it transpired from our meeting, is also an inglory hunter. He is from Manchester yet chose to support Newcastle.

On the other hand, like the above guy a few posts back, he could be a failed glory hunter... I suspect that there are quite a few like this with Newcastle. Trippy Londoner, anyone :D

I started supported them when they on the verge of relegation to the old Division Three. :(

Ah.

This is the thing

(Major admission time)

I only started following football closely in about 98. (It's not my fault, honest. My parents were a pair of yoghurt-knitting bread-making ageing hippies who told me football was the opium of the masses, and I wasn't allowed a telly, so I had no chance to get into the game until I went to Uni.)

Arsenal had just won the double.

I decided, nonetheless, to begin supporting west ham :)

What age were you?:hmm:

I started supporting Celtic as a kid despite going to a Protestant primary school in the east end of Glasgow. It's called a death wish :D

I grew up in a time and place where everyone supported United and was when United started winning all the Premier Leagues but I chose Liverpool, hardly unglory but not jumping on the bandwagon...like Revol. ;)

I started supporting Manchester United in 1988, the first thing I saw them win was the FA Cup two years later.I picked them cos my big brother, who knew nothing about football was a Liverpool supporter (read glory hunting muppet) and cos Norman Whiteside played for them.

Liverpool were the team of choice for glory hunters at my primary school.

Awesome story!

I myself once played (and scored!) on the hallowed Ochilview turf :D

can you ban JTG from seeing this thread? He's going to go mental.

Why should I? Just because I enjoy pointing out the illogicality of your views doesn't mean I'm going to take issue with RengadeDog, who's usually pretty sane.

TBH though, I'm quite surprised that I haven't got more abuse than I have. Generally people on this forum exhibit a sort of reverse snobbery about 'new football fans'...

Jesus RD that disgraceful! 1998.

And we were in our prime that season. Lampard, cole, rio, dicanio, dicks, berkovic, sinclair, foe, hartson & jon moncur before he started getting booked every single danm game.

Finished 5th 10 points and six places above spurs.

Happy days!
