I was gonna say My Bloody Valentine but someone beat me to it.
Both they and the Pogues were, yeah, “London” bands, but had irish movers and shakers.
Someone mentioned Sultans of Ping FC. Who were basically shit. Fun, but shit.
The Sultans’ guitarist, Alan McFeely, from Cork, now plays in the band Sister, who are much better. Kind of cowboy junkies, PJ Harvey, mary chain, velvets type stuff. See myspace.com/sistermusic.
Alan is also known by his nom de plume Rod Stern, who plays psychopathic misanthropic bluegrass and Cash-style country. See myspace.com/rodstern.
Sister also feature various former members of the Young Offenders, another band from Cork, who were led by Al’s younger brother Ciaran. They were kind of a sort of glam-rock Supergrass-type band. Ciaran is now Simple Kid, who has made some interesting albums in a kind of Beck meets Neil Young sort of vein.
But anyway, even if there had never been any good Irish rock bands, the amount of fantastic folk music that has come out of Ireland would make up for it a millionfold.
Are Smokey Angle Shades Irish? I think they might be. myspace.com/smokeyangleshades. They're like US West Coast country rock crossed with a Chas'n'Dave knees up.
