Irish punk

several of the band were quite horrified by shanes embrace of acid house - it was defiantely a direction that he wanted to bring the band... which was wierd as he didn't do that with the popes
He was never averse to bringing in diverse musical influences, that's what made him so special for a while. He didn't just tread the usual route.

I reckon by the time of the Popes he'd killed off so many braincells that he just didn't have the brilliant imagination to create any more evocative, disturbing and moving lyrics, and relied on what he thought would make him money. It's a fucking tragedy.

possibly, but i think that 'the dunes' fulfills those 3 criteria...

Honestly? It pains me to say it, but to me that song is merely a pastiche of several Pogues songs. He knew how to do that, he knew what worked lyrically without overly stretching himself

and here was me thinking this was a thread about things like a crowd of 1000+ predominantly Prod kids in 1979 screaming SS RUC at Outcasts gigs

you remember LMS?

'desperately seeking satan' is quite possibly the finest t-shirt of any band ever

controversially i think TPE were better than the undertones

hardly controversial to these ears and I'd take Big Time by Rudi above bloody Teenage Kicks any second of the day

bit dumb this morning ...LMS??? what does it stand for???

nice to see someone mentioning Ruefrex somewhere in the thread...fine band

and talking of contemporary bands...has anyone come across the Dangerfields??

i *think* it was something like Larne Music System - but as that was such a shit name i think most people just called them LMS.

just remembered Indust as well - stretching the 'punk' definition somewhat but psychadelic industrial noodlings of the highest order...

I still have a demo tape of theirs at home. They used to do gigs with mates of mine. Didn't know about the t-shirt but it can't be as good as the Fatima Mansions 'Let's not go to work' one.

Or the Evangelists

Muff Against Bush

(they moved to Muff, Co Donegal for some reason...probably to make the T-shirts)

Dave this thread is about Irish punk . Dropkick murphys don't count what with them being less irish than Shane McGowan ( or however the fuck his name is spelt )

ah they redesigned that a bit as the early drafts had a swastika that was a bit too prominent...much better now

OH FUCK YES...Reservoir Prods...prob the best T of all time (I don't actually know how to post graphics up here but would be great if you could find it and post for all to see). Still got the album but long since lost the T.

boston irish, new york italian, london irish - its still a valid 'ethnicity' for want of a better word - in a thread about irish music i see no problem with including boston-irish in there - all very much IMO of course

can't actually find it- i know it was ripped off and sold at various orange events in a somewhat less knowing and amusing way... y'know with bibs that say things like 'born to walk garvaghy' and the like...

THERAPY? for me are one of the best Irish bands ever........Their new album One Cure Fits All is incredible, they get better and better!

And I'm amazed nobody has mentioned THIN LIZZY!!!!!!

(were they punk?? I know Therapy? definetely are).

Not to be too pedantic, but the Pogues weren't Irish (they had one Irish member [two at a push - Shane barely spent any time there] and a few 2nd or 3rd generation Irish), they weren't an Irish band (didn't come from Ireland), and they didn't play Irish punk as such (you only have to listen to Turkish Song of the Damned to realise that). :)

cock, quite frankly.

AAAARGH just seen the date... I am answering posts from 5 fuckin years ago

You're still a knob though.
You know what? I was just wondering what fucking dickhead had bumped this thread, and was re-reading it thinking 'jesus wept I was one ornery bastard 5 years ago' :) Tbh, I would have argued about absolutely ANYTHING back then, so I wouldn't take it all too seriously - unless you want a fight that is, and if you do, outside now you arrogant cunt
