I was the only Arse supporter in my school during that time,Forrest were popular for a while due to the success they had in the late '70s plus of course Liverpool.

there weren't that many arsenal fans at my school either in the 70s - Man U , were most popular, then Liverpool, then bristol rovers, then bristol city

I'm not surprised. I've just noted it. But yeah the newer africans may go for other teams; I've just noted that the afrocaribbean second generation/third generation are often arsenal fans. I agree with your reasons why that was, and I think Ian Wright was a big role model

Strangely enough the local was showing the Man U vs Fulham game last night in a side room. Admittedly it wasn't a must see game, but the fans in the room numbered about 15 Africans and 2 loud Irish folks, none of whom were supporting Fulham. Quite a strange mix really.

Derby County and Leeds Utd have their share too, from their 70s hay days.
Yea I remember being in a pub in Lurgan a few years ago and met this bloke who supported Leeds (which I found hilarious as everyone else supported Man Utd or Liverpool, but he had the misfortune to pick a team that used to be fairly good but were then (and now) fucking shite!)

Its not just glory, often fans follow the exploits of a local boy. My team Watford has a number of regular Irish posters on message boards, some currently following JJ O'Toole, but some longer term. Over the years loyalties stick. Same for most clubs.

Sunderland suddenly seem to have developed an Irish following no doubt due to being owned by an Irish consortium and having the blessed Niall Quinn as chairman, plus having recently had some Cork bloke as manager.
