Iran going mellow

OK, not so much in rural Iran, but in Tehran every Friday and Saturday night the youth, and there are a massive % of them, are having it large; all on western booze and drugs, wearing western clothes and to western music. Those who are middle class come to Europe or the US to do their studies. They want change badly and they are not looking East for it, nor are they giving much of a fuck about what went on before they were even born.

of course as they get older they could become more conservative, but things are changing.

Going by Iranians I know that's a bit simplistic. The drink and drugs can and does often go hand in hand with lots of unquestioned social conservatism. So a young bloke can drink and fuck around but he'll still come down like a ton of bricks on his sister if she talks to a guy.

Which is my point really. There may be real, long term change occurring among young Iranians but years of social conservatism don't disappear over night just because some people drink and go to parties.

just sticking this on a random iran thread - I am hearing that iran has the thumbs up from IAEA re meeting its nuke requirements. expect aubsequent opening of the the improved iran to the markets soon afterwards.


curious that the saudies are killing the oil market by oversupply , just as iran prepares to re-enter the mainstream oil narket.

I think the Saudis were more interested in breaking up the growing oil production in Canada and the northern US. They can't have their main customer get to thinking they don't need you any more. The cash and arms that keep them in power might go away if that happened.

And then when the yanks got shirty and started flexing muscle, by sending their fast attack craft out to buzz the Iranian fast boats, the Iranians surrounded them and took a load of their marines prisoner .

They let them go after a few days so I suppose Iran has mellowed a tad since 79 .

I think this sort of thing is half expected really. Khameni and the IRG are letting Rouhani cut deals but they still want to maintain some sort of emnity to justify themselves. I think the US know that and their flexing is the same playing to their own hawks. Only means something if anyone is stupid enough to get involved and escalate from shows of strength. Same with the Saudi embassy stuff, Khameni provoked that to give a new focus for the propaganda. How much it means long term though who knows. Either way Iran isn't acting as one generic entity.
